For those on the island, take care.

A tsunami warning is in effect for coastal British Columbia and parts of Alaska after an earthquake of magnitude 8.2 struck 256 kilometres southeast of Chiniak, Alaska, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The quake struck at 1:31 a.m. PT and prompted a tsunami warning for the entire B.C. coast and a tsunami watch for the entire U.S. west coast, the U.S. Tsunami Warning System said.

Affected areas for BC are shown here (Prince Rupert, Port Hardy, Bella Bella, Tofino):

Holy Shit, I hope it just turns out to be a warning and nothing more.

Tsunami Warning Cancelled around 4:30 am! I awoke to the sound of the Tsunami Warning Siren in our district on Van Isle. Looks like they did a full evacuation up in Tofino but it's all been stood down.

right here and now
It's not a lot of warning, however ANY head's up is good.
Given the nature of the randomness of an earthquake this shows the tsunami EWS really works and is effective in alerting citizens to get themselves to higher ground before the worst happens.
I heard that a nearby weather buoy recorded a 10m swell.
But, the "mighty wave" recorded at Tofino was barely a few cm in height!
You might lose your home, but at least you can get away with your family, pets and minor personal treasures.

Look at some of the tsunami videos on youtube. They are terrible.
Can you imagine what a ten metre swell would do to Victoria?
Play it safe!

Many may not be aware there is a community on the Island that has experienced a tsunami in the not so distant past..

It's very interesting going through the museum in Port Alberni showing the pics of the devastation plus the upgrades to the warning system they installed after the tsunami. They really got hit hard.

This most recent one is over now.

Still, it can't help but make me think we are all way over due for the Big One.
