Who Watches Reality Programs?

Is there any explanation for why people watch reality shows where random people appear to do nothing but fight and argue? They seem particularly popular with a lot of people I know, in their 20’s.

I’ve only ever watched a couple of seasons of Survivor in the early days, and The Amazing Race. At least there is a purpose to TAR, and interesting locations, but Kardashians, Big Brother, Real Housewives of whatever, that fat woman and her fat kid, and a seemingly endless stream of others?

The fact I even know about some of these shows disturbs me, and shows how pervasive they are, but what’s the attraction? Who watches them? Why do they become wealthy pseudo celebrities?

At one time I regularly watched The Ultimate Fighter on Spike and then on TSN, not so much anymore. Sometimes I tune in for the all female fighter editions, most of them are not only tuff bad asses and very good fighters, they're insanely hot too. I also watched some of the The TFC Story on TSN about Toronto FC's soccer camps, selection for contracts and positions on the first team. I have also watched other survival & manhunter type shows.

Its nice to see people just say I want someone instead of the games out there. Hard to get, figuring out who is single or gay or won't date a certain race. I am no good at those games. I like Tim McGee should go on those shows cause we clearly suck at this.

Then you should watch a show called..UNREAL...its a comedy/drama, actually filmed here and they use I believe a mansion on Marine Drive to film it. Its about the producers of a dating reality TV show trying to drive ratings to prevent the show from being cancelled and the lengths that they will go to to prod the contestants into dramatic situations.

I’ve always been a survivor fan. Another out-there survival show I got hooked on is ALONE. A couple of seasons were filmed in BC. It’s like survivor in cold climate with no tribes, no rewards, no voting. Just survival. Loved it!

I started watching big brother when I was trapped working in a shithole oilfield town many years ago. I could never figure out how they managed to find so many stupid and annoying people willing to humiliate themselves on television for free.

I don't watch too much tv anymore, as I'm to lazy to wipe the snow off the satellite ....but I will admit to enjoying Alone.
I find it interesting what people will do in a survival situation, and what priorities they will put ahead of others, like shelter, food and fire...and watch the eventual physical breakdown of the body, turn into a mental one after a few weeks.
