(Vancouver chances at each pick)

Of course in true Vancouver fashion, they have their best chance at a top pick in possibly the weakest draft since 2012 and 2007 (womp womp). However, despite reporting from my sick bed, I'm still remaining optimistic and have thus compiled my preferred list:

1. Nico Hischier
2. Nolan Patrick
3. Cale Makar
4. Gabriel Vilardi
5. Cody Glass

Thoughts on any sleepers? Risers? Fallers? General masochism about being a Canucks fan (or any other, really)? Lay it on me.

It seems the Canucks never have any luck so I am getting a bad feeling that they're not going to get either of the top two picks. If they do get the top pick, I am leaning towards Nolan Patrick. Right shot centre that does everything well but not necessarily great might be the safer pick. Though I do like Nico Hischier's hockey IQ and above average speed but .........

I agree. The Canucks are more likely to get screwed than rewarded, so I do not expect good fortune.

However, I should state this: I liked the player they got with their first pick last year. People need to stop whining about Tkachuk - Juolevi was the better choice for the Canucks' needs.

Totally agree on that one... Canucks needed Juolevi (high end defensemen) more than Tkachuk.

Yup the Canucks should have tanked the last 6 games last season and been in the run for Matthews. But as usual we can never do anything right when it comes to drafting. And somehow they won't get in the top 3. Being a Canucks fan is frustrating.
If Willie had coached the team in a transition (rebuild) mode and if the Canucks would have gotten Matthews, then maybe he would still have a job today.

Patrick is my local boy. I would like to see a little more consistency and work ethic but i suppose one could blame "youth".
When he's on he's ON. Lots of potential with the right coach.

Also: If Vegas ends up picking first, you'll know Bettman rigged it.

Wow.... time to go D again in the draft IMHO. With Demko coming up the Canucks can build from the goal out. You cam always get decent forwards via trade or free agency but defenseman are a premium in this league. Maybe the Canucks can trade down and collect some additional assets but definitely go for a defenseman.

Try cheering for the Leaf's instead of the Canucks. The Canucks will be wandering in the wilderness for many years. Too bad....time to move on.

Having friends in Chicago and Edmonton; this really hurts because they had their teams rebuilt with numerous consecutive number one picks. I got a text from Chicago minutes after the lotto with some belly laughs from a SNL clip. Bastard!

Changed format (bullshit, I sense the fix is in) and we end up with third and now fifth overall.

28th and 29th and end up with 5th both years.

The problem with the format is that it doesn't actively dissuade tanking at all (see: Toronto last year). Plus, the whole obsession with tanking is exaggerated. Most teams in the bottom 5 or 10 are legitimately just bad teams lacking in poor talent. Teams like the Oilers who floundered in crap for 10 years really are an exception.

Not to mention other teams shouldn't be punished for Edmonton messing up the developments of the 3 prior 1st overalls. I have no qualms to pick with Dallas or Philly but it's ridiculous that they get to jump up and bump Vancouver and Colorado out.

What I would like to see is a lottery win gives you the ability to move up a maximum of 4 spots (like New Jersey in 2011). I think it's the fairest set up overall aside from just drafting as the standings allow. If teams want to tank so be it -- they risk alienating a fanbase and losing ticket income.

Ironically the team who made them change the format benefited from the new system the most by getting McDavid after being 28th. It's ridiculous.
