unsedated colonoscopy?

I'm scheduled for a colonoscopy in the near future and was told I had the choice of being sedated or not, if I could handle the "discomfort"

It seems difficult for me to think anyone could take the "discomfort" of being roto-rootered without sedation but maybe I'm wrong.
Has anyone had the "pleasure" of an unsedated colonoscopy?

Pretty damn sure Imma go with sedation,but interested in learning more.

Don't even consider no sedation!!!! I had one where i wasn't quite out when they started and trust me, it hurt like hell when the probe had to go around a corner. Never again!!!! i want to be out cold every time now.

the sedation option is local, so not out-cold,just drifting-in-the-ozone.

I like being out cold. The killer is the cleanser the night before.

I detest being sedated or having any 'altered' feeling so I went w/out...there is discomfort, but it's more like a cramp than anything else. The machine actually is pumping air inside you to enable the camera to see, so you have to get over the awkward feeling of passing gas and just let it go and relax. The worst part, (as someone previously mentioned) is the 2-3 days of 'prep' prior to the appointment.
I'll go w/out sedation from now on...thankfully I have another 9 years, 10 months, 2 weeks, 3 days and 14 hours before the next go-'round

I've had both way's but unsedated was not an issue, they just said hold on we are going around a corner. Can watch it all on the sony TV too,at least I did. The only uncomfortable part was the attending nurse was a good freind of wife, she traded spots with another in the end.

I've had one un-sedated, and it wasn't uncomfortable at all. But I understand from the attending technician who runs the equipment that it's different for everyone, and some people NEED the sedation, which is why there was a nurse in attendance with a big-ass needle in hand, should it be required... It also meant I could watch the procedure on the monitor and see the nice pink colour of the inside of my... er... tunnel...

Agree with the prep (purging the large intestine) being the most uncomfortable part of the whole deal...

My father & his brother both had early stage colon cancer. I had a second cousin die of colon cancer at 36. I had my colonoscopy scheduled for just a few months after my 40th birthday a few (oh hush!) years ago.

Had to have one quite young due to family history and did unsedated and it was fine. Not sure how anyone felt pain as there are no pain receptors up that far unless medical school was a waste of time. Sedated is a drag as you will stay longer at out patient, feel like crap for longer and any time you are fully sedated there is a risk. It is also pretty cool if you get to watch the screen (they will let you if you ask) as it it like watching an episode of Rick and Morty.

As Erica said, if there is a history you need it done. By the time symptoms develop you are in big trouble.

My dad had diverticulitis. It killed him. His only symptom was indigestion and occasional diarrhea.

One of my friends refuses to get one, he thinks it is too gay in his words. He said he would rather get colon cancer than have someone stick somerhing up his ass. I prefer not being dead.

Had it done twice.Slept like a baby through the whole thing.The worst part in my case was that the stupid nurse who was trying to get the needle in my vain,to get the goodies,couldn't fine it and butchered me.WTF,she went fishing for my vein while the needle was already Inside of me.Worst ever.Just Woke up in the recovery room when my son came to take me home.
