In Your Wildest Dreams!
Hi all!

I'm planning a trip in March to the Land of the Midnight Sun...Yellowknife, NWT! Crazy, I know, but I'm a real history/geography nerd. I have made it part of my 5 year plan to see as much as I can of this amazing nation of ours before I start my international explorations. (Gentlemen who want travel companions in Canada, get at me!!!) Trip #1 is the Canadian Shield & the Arctic!

I'm looking at flights for mid-to-end of March, and there's a significant price difference between WestJet flights & Air Canada flights. I would really like some opinions from people who have flown both fairly recently, as I have tended to stick to WestJet in the past. I know some people have very strong opinions on one vs the other (I'm looking at YOU, Ms Lavinia!!! ;D) Thoughts? Thanks!

Have you thought about Air North? It's half owned by an aboriginal nation, is based in Whitehorse, has a daily flight between Vancouver and Whitehorse, flies mostly Boeing 737. It's a 2 hour flight - direct, which Westjet doesn't offer.

I wouldn't fly Air Canada if they paid me. Air North is about the same passenger comfort wise as Westjet.

I hadn't considered it, no; I hadn't even heard of it! Thanks; I will check that out!

Edit: Looks like the most expensive alternative; about $750 round trip instead of Air Canada's $400...decisions, decisions!

Westjet is always my choice! Better service and much better at keeping on schedule. The company usually flys us on air Canada but if I'm paying westjet is the only choice!

I'm the opposite, hate WestJet with a passion. Air Canada has always been good to me even better then you have status with them. I travel usually 2-4 times a month through Western Canada and Air Canada has been awesome for me. WestJet when I have taken them have always been a bunch of clowns or just painful to deal with.

In the end, all that really matters is safety record, fare and choice of flight times. All those being equal, I take WestJet in a heartbeat over Air Canada. I just like their friendly, helpful attitude as opposed to the stuffy, arrogant attitude you get from Air Canada.

I am starting to hate Airlines like I hate car dealers. "You want tires on the car?? Oh. That's extra!!!!" If I'm taking a trip, DUH YEAH...I'm gonna have some shit to take with me!!! As far as I'm concerned, they should charge for carry-on. Those people clog up the aisles so it takes WAY longer to board and deplane. A far as waiting for your bags, sure you might have to wait for a bit but you go faster on the other end, thru security so really a trade-off. When you consider how long, too, it takes just to get off the plane, it is about the same as waiting at the carousel. I like the few minutes to stretch anyway.

When you compare them to airlines of the past, CP, Wardair, air3000 there all crap! Nowadays there really isn't much difference between them! Flying is just an evil necessity to me these days

I traveled to the north frequently in both, until about two years ago. Can't recall difference in service. One difference I do remember is their cancellation policy. My travel schedule and itinerary changed frequently. AC would return money; WJ would allow me to use voucher for the same price for another travel. With my last WJ travel, I never needed to fly the same/similar itinerary so I could never use their voucher. They still have my money.

Also, once an AC flight from Prince Rupert was delayed. The flight steward wanted to make up for the inconvenience by offering a few free drinks of scotch. Despite my offer to pay for the drinks, he wouldn't accept it.

No, my uncle doesn't own AC.

I fly a lot. 100 to 150 thousand miles a year. It's a deeply personal thing and people tend to react very emotionally and if I may say, not very logically. Taking out the hyperbole is important. I admit to having a large bias, but here are some facts. First, their on time performance is essentially the same. It may range by a percentage point or two one way or the other, but they fly the same routes and deal with the same weather.

Second, SKYTRAX, the most well known airline rating group has their customer service rated exactly the same. Yes, Westjet has some neat things, like their Christmas events and used to be a lot more fun and quirky with safety demos and the like, but as they have grown, they have lost touch with that aspect of their culture. Now they are like any other airline, sometimes you get a good crew and sometimes they are outright miserable. Air Canada has made big strides here and in flight, they are identical, except in AC business class which is far superior to anything WJ does. On the ground, I actually give the slight edge to AC, as they simply treat frequent travelers better. The lounge offering, and status recognition leaves Westjet in the dust. Westjet used to have younger, more attractive crew members too, some real stunners. However, a ton of their crews now are older people, male and female. AC has had a ton of retirements and has replaced with younger people so I actually view them equally there too.

Westjet is a domestic airline, while AC is an international airline. Westjet may be adding one or two Europe trips, and recently got some 767's (not very many of them however) for their charter work and to add some European destinations, but they are not the same at all. Next, 95% of Westjets fleet as a result is the 737. If you are flying business class, it's not even a competition, so I will compare economy. WJ is 3 across either side, they recently blocked the middle seat in the first few rows to make their Plus offering more attractive. If you are not up front or in the exit row, these planes are simply miserable for a long haul flight. The TV has major issues on many flights with connections and you pay for movies. AC has larger, roomier and more comfortable planes. the 777 is a very comfortable plane to fly and the 787 is simply great. The seat are nearly identical in most cases, but the in flight entertainment on AC mainline is free and features movies, tv shows, music and XM radio. The buy on board is identical. Edge to AC on a longer flight, toss up on a short 1 to 2 hour flight.

Schedule wise, it's very clear Westjet targets the vacation traveler, while AC is business airline. Only a leisure traveler would say something like "I don't mind stopping in Calgary on my way anywhere". That's simply ridiculous to a business traveler like me. AC has more direct flights without stops. For me, it's AC all the time, but I do fly Westjet several times a year if needed or it's more convenient for my schedule, but over 2 hours in flight length, it's all AC, all the time. The other item is that they price match, nearly all of the time, so you really have to work to find which combo of service and price works for you, you pay to check bags, you pay for better seats, every airline does it now.

As for Yellowknife, using Kayak or something similar shows that you are likely best off using a combination of AC and WJ based solely on price. It's considered short haul, so I personally would choose on price alone, with a preference to AC because I get lounge access and Altitude credit for my flights. Pick your best combo of time and price and enjoy!
Thanks so much for your thoughtful reply!

I hate AC, but their on-time and cancellation policies are better.

Flying into a place with weather issues, I'd have to go with AC if you want to be more sure of getting there on time.

North Air has seat sales as well and can be competitive with the other airlines, but in my opinion this airline's service level is ten times better than both of our national airlines. In fact it was the best I have ever had. I felt as though they valued me and treated me first class.

If you fly Air Canada or WestJet, you go to Calgary or Edmonton - wait up to six hours in the pre-screened area of the airport - then fly on to Yellowknife. If you leave the airport, you have to be screened again. Never mind that your luggage came off the plane and is now waiting on carts for the plane to Yellowknife.

That's why I always choose a direct flight instead of a route with a layover. It's not just the money or time, it's the potential luggage hassles, the being stuck in an airport lounge, drinking at airport prices and eating at airport prices - with airport customer service. You haven't lived until trying to attract a server's attention is called harassment. You have to schedule coffee refills in advance. If you leave the table to go on a call of nature - your table has been cleared, your stuff is in lost and found in Terminal 2 where you can retrieve it - After tomorrow between 12:01 and 12:05 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays if the date is an odd number.

Having never flown any of the airlines that go up north I can't comment on them. As for Air Canada vs Westjet. A few years ago I'd pay more to fly Westjet and avoid Air Canada. Now it's really 6 of 1 half a dozen of another. Prices are pretty similar. I prefer Boeing to Airbus and Embraer. Air canada tends to fly the narrow bodied Embraers on shorter routes. The service is horrendous as per usual (even in first or business class) which is all I'll fly for any trip longer than 4 hours. Having said that, Westjets service has hit the skids as well. I was on a 5 hour flight on plus. (Meals and drinks included). They had only 2 snack items on the menu and only came through the cabin twice. One of the items was an "off" hummus that caused a very sudden sprint to the bathroom to regurgitate it. I informed the flight attendant of this and was told to grab a barf bag. I informed her that I didn't actually have one and if she didn't remove the offensive hummus promptly, she'd be cleaning up my vomit. It disappeared pretty quickly. I choose airlines based on safety, comfort, and services. Not solely on price. Overall I've flown Air Canada way more than Westjet. And generally have a fairly meh time. So I will still usually choose Westjet. Newer fleet of boeings, generally friendlier staff, and competitive rates. I'm leaving for Asia in a few days. I'm flying business on Cathay Pacific. Even though there was a $2000 price difference with Air Canada. Air Canada's business class sucks compared to Cathay, and I'm pretty sure the flight attendants actually enjoy helping you. I never have to summon them for anything. They just assume you want your drink refilled and the food is excellent. For an airline anyway. Lol. That's my not so humble opinion of someone who's wracked up over 1 million air miles and flown a shit ton of airlines all over the place.

Agree with Lavinia, for flights overseas Cathay is fantastic as is Lufthansa.

As for Air Canada, we all know their motto, "We aren't happy till you're unhappy". I travel extensively for business, I will spare you the horror stories, as there are many, but I avoid AC at all costs.

For your trip Erica my recommendation would be Air North. A few extra dollars but it's direct and the service is good.

Good luck!!!

Well I am all about a great Customer Service experience, after all! THAT is a major consideration for me; much more so than just the cheapest alternative. Right now, I have to say my preference is to go for a direct flight. I've got a bit of a phobia regarding DBT and so I would rather do a short haul with no stops than two quick up & downs with a rest in between...(there's a dirty joke or three in there!) Customer Service & Comfort win out over simple COST.

Having flown about half a million miles with Cathay, I have to agree with you Ms Lavinia, though I used to find that the Singapore Airlines Business Class was probably better than Cathay. However, Cathay frequently addressed me by name when I got on the plane (still do occasionally) and so made me feel special. I stay away from North American airlines whenever possible, but I guess that isn't possible if you are flying to Yukon. I'd keep a close eye on Air North. I've never flown them, but it is quite possible their service is better (not at all difficult to imagine), and the direct flight is a bonus.
I also highly recommend Air New Zealand, and not just for their inflight safety videos (not that they will be able to get you to Yukon).
Lufthansa I found to be 'meh' and wasn't impressed.

You are most welcome. The sad fact is you simply can't fly direct to Yellowknife from Vancouver, you are stuck going through Edmonton or Calgary. Pick the best price with the shortest layover.

As for Europe or Asia, I stick to Star Alliance, as my status gets me perks, the business class is far better than AC. European travel for me is Lufthansa, through Frankfurt from Vancouver. Asia is Singapore Airlines or ANA all the way. I actually like British Airways or Cathay better depending on the airplane used, but without status with them, the business class fare is too steep for me to bother.
I can fly direct: Air North has ONE daily nonstop between Vancouver & YK. The one way fare is about the same as AC's round trip rate!

Yes I can assure you that it was a fairly quick up and down. In this case I am not so disappointed that the experience didn't leave me with some stiff experience. Truly I paid what I had to pay and the attendants although they didn't provide membership into the mile high club, they were still good company.
