In Your Wildest Dreams!
Was an avid collector when younger. As you are probably aware, Canadian coins minted prior to 1968, regardless of condition, are worth ~ 11 times their face value because of Silver content. Obviously condition and rarity adds to that value.

You have to be careful with some of the 1968s too...there are some in that year that are some silver, but many are all nickel. IF the quarter sticks to a magnet, it does not contain any silver. I did get your PM Thora, and I will get back to you ASAP! :D

At the moment, I have really switched my focus away from older Canadian coins. My current fascination is with coins from Nord Pas de Calais during the reign of Louis XV. It's the region of France where the Chunnel comes out; it's where the ferry lands. It's where Dieppe is, and where the evacuation of Dunkirk took place, and I have discovered that telling this French company how much I, as a Canadian, love their merchandise and its history, makes them very happy to accept my best offers for these tiny pieces of history you can hold in your hands. Today, I purchased a Charles I coin...really cheap, because it isn't perfect. I also have an amazing Queen Anne coin made from silver captured by the British during a battle against the Spanish...the coins are marked "VIGO" so that all the citizens who came into possission of these coins were reminded of the glorious victory! I have Henry VIIIs, James IIs, Elizabeth Is, William & Marys, coins depicting satyrs and nymphs...Many of the older Victorian coins are stunning as well, and as my collection grows, I start thinking more and more about thinning some chaff so I have more room for more neat stuff!

Actually I would argue that to some extend everything is a bubble if you believe that eventually value returns to the mean average. For example gold really doesn't have a foundation as to why it's priced at a particular value. There's no shortage of it, it doesn't pay a dividend, and it value is more based on speculative criteria, such as the likelihood of a war, or inflation, but it's intrinsic value isn't really known. Silver is similar with the exception that it's not as popular so the fluctuations are less, sort of like commercial property verse residential real estate.

Do Canadian coin collectors collect American coin sets (Proof cases with a half dollar, quarter, dime, penny, nickel)? Ones from 1970-1985 or so? Obviously all in mint condition.

I don't have these, unfortunately, but have a buddy whose uncle gave him these sets every year, and he may wanna cash them out. I thought he wouldn't get much for the sets, though.

Tim MacGee
Short answer Tim McGee is that some do.
At the moment, those are worth more as proof sets than for melt. I would still hang onto them though.

Investment in precious metals is never meant as a short term strategy. It;s a LONG TERM HEDGE against inflation. World economies are changing due to geopolitical events...my silver and gold are not worth what I paid for them at the moment, but they are far from worthless!

Gold and silver may not be worthless but both sure turned out to be a worthless investment the past two years compared to the stock market. Should I like gold more at $1000 and more again at $900? At what point do I stop liking it?

Did you really just necro a thread from last January to insult Erica? Really? Wow nice dude. Two of your three posts in this thread have been douchebaggy. At least you are able to be consistent.

His douchebaggy posts may have saved people from making a losing financial investment. Thereby helping members keep money in their pockets that that can now spend on their favourite SP. I think he has severed the community well.
Gold bugs have been continuously preaching bad advice for the past 5 yrs. Every time gold and silver dropped they kept saying it was a buying opportunity yet it kept dropping while the market kept climbing.
Gold may have its day, you just may have to wait a hundred years.

Of course, it could be argued that anyoe who made any investments anywhere after simply reading a post on a forum is apt to make some bad investments. People ought to do their own research and make up their own minds. For myself, I ended up not buying any more precious metals for now, simply watching the price of what i have decline. I didn't sell it all off in a panic, though, either.
