Because of the way the EU works, there was nothing that could be done to prevent these attacks. Laws like the Conservatives Bill C - 51 wouldn't have stopped the terrorists. France's Police and Security Agencies have been on high alert since the attacks in January - this still happened.

http://live.reuters.com/Event/Paris_attacks_2

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news...urant-explosion-near-stadium/article27256201/

At least 6 locations were attacked at the same time and the terrorists chose locations where they could kill the maximum number of people. 100 at a concert, 35 at a restaurant, another 35 at a Soccer Stadium, etc.

On a forum from UK with members posting from Paris right now. Absolutely horrible.
Three young guys went into concert hall and were executing people, very calmly and unemotional. Over a hundred dead in concert hall. I cannot imagine how someone can do such a thing. Imagine going to a concert in Vancouver and that happened. It's insane.
France now in state of emergency, police/army deployed.
Condolences to all involved.

Not to jump to any conclusions but, the whole thing has a very familiar smell to it.
To the First Reponders, the National Security Teams, And the deployed Forces on the front lines...May your God be with you, keep and protect you.. in this time of uncertainty.

Check your closet..:)
Please pray for my country. For the victims, for their families, and for the violence to end in France.
We are believe me.

But with Justin at the helm of this country...we will be praying for our own....
But like our new Minister of National Defense said....we have nothing to fear.....

I respectfully disagree. Terrorism knows no borders and it's only a matter of time until it comes here.

Earlier this evening Ian Hanomansing on CBC interviewed an x CSIS expert who said that the action should be taken to the source (whether ISIS or Al Qaeda, who cares, it's splitting hairs) or it'll come here. Totally contradicts the new government's approach of exiting the operation. Canada should continue to play a role, alongside the US, the U.K. etc. and other nations (including France) should join.
Then they broke the interview to hear what our PM had to say. Very disappointing. His first test and he did very poorly, and I'll tell you why. Because he looked weak. He made Canada look weak. You can show empathy but at the same time be resolut of the role Canada plays in this globe. Instead of answering the reporters question on whether this changes the government's position on its future role he just avoided it and said that we have to learn.

What do we have to learn?
This was a coordinated, expertly planned attack to butcher as many people in the cradle of liberalism.
This was France's 9/11.

I'll give you a hint. Not all Muslims are terrorists. But it just so happens that 100% of beheadings and maybe close to 100% of world terror is done by Muslims. Get a grip on reality people. Now thousands of refugees are coming and with time they will bite the hands that save them. Mark my words.

You prefer a government that feeds it? Because that is what the terrorists are hoping for.

Reality check. We cannot prevent these suicide attacks. They are designed to provoke specific responses that play right into the terrorists hands.

Talking the tough talk, taking offensive military actions abroad, persecuting minorities domestically, these things all serve to do one thing. They make us a target and provoke an escalating conflict that can not be won by traditional warfare.

The goal of terrorists is to have us live in fear; to give up our freedoms for the perception of security and protection. They want to disrupt and divide countries. The west will predictably retaliate with military action ensuring yet another generation of middle eastern terrorists. Further, we will start to turn on our own people, a xenophobia alienating entire groups and spawning 'home grown' terrorists within our countries.

The amount that Canada plays into the terrorists agenda will determine how big of a target we become.

That is the reason for Bill C-51, but is that legislation the best way to counter the threat? I would suggest not.
Maybe some aspects of the legislation does have some merit (greater coordination and information-sharing between agencies), but a lot of it is misguided and potentially dangerous under the wrong regime.

Halting the immigration of refugees is like saying we need to stop licensing drivers, 'cause 2000 people are year die a year in motor accidents and another 10,000 serious injured. And we need to ban people from having cell phones 'cause distracted driving is the biggest cause of traffic accidents.
Using the wrong policy tools to counter the threat and potentially increasing the likelihood of becoming a target.

I have no problem with the monitoring of those you have travelled to and spent time in the regions where ISIL has been operating, but within the bounds of reasonable laws and civil liberties.

The solution to modern terrorism isn't bully boy leaders that put into law measures that will take away everyone's freedom. That's what Bill C - 51 does and it is what Bill C - 24 does. France already has laws that are more intrusive, take away more rights than Bill C - 51 and Bill C - 24. The attacks in January still happened, the attack by a known terrorist on a train still happened, the attacks yesterday still happened.

Ever since January, the French have viewed the Muslims in France with suspicion, the attacks yesterday still happened.

As long as the world continues to permit nations to breed and support terrorism, we will have terrorism. These terrorists, as is the case with the 911 terrorists, were funded with the Dane-geld that Saudi Arabia pays terrorists to not conduct their operations in Saudi Arabia. When all of the terrorists are identified, they - as was the case with the 911 terrorists - will be found to not be practicing Muslims. They will have "blended in" by drinking, seeing prostitutes, eating western foods, etc.

They are terrorists because being a terrorist is a damn comfortable lifestyle with all the money they have to spend "blending in" and "preparing" for their attack.

Take away the money, and there will be fewer terrorists almost immediately. Take away the Saudi Dane-geld and the phony charities that move money world wide and the comfortable terrorist lifestyle will be gone. The terrorists will no longer be training in Afghanistan for an attack in New York or flying back and forth from the Mid East and Europe because they will no longer have the money to support those activities.

Police and Security Agencies seldom have that much difficulty keeping an eye on the local dissatisfied nut case. What is difficult is keeping an eye on the person that can be in Medina on Monday and Paris on Tuesday.

One would think that making other countries think twice about taking in refugees is exactly a goal of the terrorists, because the more hope their people have of getting out from under their tyranny (even as refugees) the less control they have over their people.

They (the terrorists) don't want integration. They don't want moderation. They don't want mingling with outsiders, period. They don't want there to be another way for their people to choose. Do you want to give them what they want and leave their victims to the wolves?

I grieve for Paris. And I grieve for the Syrians and other victims too. It's not Western vs. Eastern or Christian vs. Muslim. It's rational vs. radical.

What would be your off the cuff response, seriously? The attack happened and a few hours later you expect a solution?
I think he should have a meeting with CSIS/ DND/ foreign Affairs and proceed from there.
This is not the time for witty sound bites.

Remember ISIS kills this many daily in their pseudo caliphate.
And no, they are not remotely interested in any negotiaton or peace. They are complete lunatics and the only way to deal with them is kill them.
Most of their fighters are not from the middle east. They are idiot kids from the west who are sucked in by slick propaganda. We've had kids from Winnipeg go to join them, one kid's father is a Forces member.

Look left. Way left.
This a horrible event that fortunately for me hasn't hurt the few I know in Paris.

As usual, there are those that want to control and imprison everyone. The west creates their own troubles. Forcing other countries to bend to our will and wondering why they push back is idiotic.

As my gramps used to say...you reap what you sow

Peace.,......this will not stop me from travelling to France in the future. Just the opposite.

Beverly Hills. In the Kitchen eatin' vittles.
I pray for the families of the fallen.

Unfortunately this is the new world we live in. Unlike conventional warfare where the two sides lines up on opposite ends and lobbed ammunition at each other until one side gave up, in this war the enemy walks among us. It will likely and unfortunately be discovered that the perpetrators of this horrific crime were French citizens or immigrants who have lived in France for a long time. It is impossible to completely protect yourself against such an enemy.
Sure we (the West and even Russia) can go in there and bomb them back to the Stone Age, although that would not happen because we in the West have become too politically correct to accept the collateral damage that has to occur in any war, but the basic radical fundamentalism would remain.
I'm not experienced in this area like some members but I personally believe that aside from a handful of the real fundamentalists who truly believe in their twisted ideology, most ISIS supporters are not. They are either evil people using this as an excuse to satisfy their own agenda (money, property, slaves) or disgruntled Western youth, perhaps with ties to the region who think they are playing a video game. What I would do is fight terror with terror. Drop small teams of special op's in country and let them go hunting. Take out their leaders, blow shit up, take them out with sniper fire, dawn raids on training centers. Start making the hunter feel hunted. Once some of the "weekend warrior" ISIS members see their buddy sitting beside them take a round in the head and they don't know where the shot came from, they might realize they are not at the local paintball range playing with their friends.

Mr. Bodine....You are so very right.
I was there, and I nuetralized so many, I lost track.
The scary and/or sad part was, after a succesful conflict, when we cleaned the blood and dust from our gear. It was a sick tradition for us to say to each other "Don't worry Brother,....There are plenty more"
We as a nation , individuals, and human beings living in a Western world, can never wrap our heads around how they think....They are truly different from us.

It sounds like France was aware that something was planned, which made their Police and Security Agencies especially vigilant. The attack still happened.

About a week ago the Germans intercepted a man on his way to Paris with arms and explosives.
http://news.nationalpost.com/news/m...rms-was-headed-to-paris-bavaria-minister-says
Citing unidentified investigators, Bayrischer Rundfunk reported that documents found during the arrest indicated that the man was from
Montenegro and was travelling to Paris. It also reported that the weapons, which it said included an automatic rifle and one kilogram of TNT, were professionally hidden inside the body of the car, a VW Golf.
People that worry that a refugee or immigrant will be a terrorist shouldn't. While the terrorists will probably try to insert one of their own into the refugee/immigrant stream, most terrorists are living too well on Saudi Dane-geld to tolerate even a short period of poverty. They'll arrive on a plane, in first class, and recruit as necessary.
