Do you feel obligated to give rides to friends who don't have their own vehicle?

Driving and owning a vehicle can be a petty expensive option for some especially with gas prices and insurance here on the lower mainland. There are also a lot people these days who think that owning a car is not a necessity anymore especially with improvements to transit and other transportation options such as car share programs, Uber and cycling.

As for myself I have chosen to own a vehicle for the sake of convenience. That is I can drive anywhere I want whenever I want. I don't necessarily drive to work if transit is a better option. I have no issues taking transit. For example, it's a 20 minute bus ride from home to downtown. However, I wouldn't necessarily take transit to Surrey, which would be close to an hour or more. I also cycle when the weather is good. I enjoy keeping my options open but granted at a cost.

That being said, some of my friends don't own vehicles and sometimes it's awkward either at the end of a night out or having to go somewhere outside of Vancouver core (Vancouver East, Burnaby, Delta, North Shore, etc). Sometimes I feel obligated to offer them a ride. I feel like a selfish ass if I don't. When I do give them a ride, I then feel used because they're out of my way i.e., they're not on my way home as I go west and they go east ($25 cab ride). And if you want to do any outdoor activities like hiking, I'll most likely end up having to drive them as well and become like a chauffeur (get them and bring them home).

Note: I don't mind offering a ride here and there but I don't want to feel obligated to do it every time.

I wonder how others deal with this? Do you usually offer a ride home to your car less friends after an evening out? Do you always end up having to drive your friends when traveling (hiking, Seattle, etc)?

Check your closet..:)
When I had a truck it was a nightmare.......and being to kind I always said yes. When I got rid of it, my phone stopped ringing and had less friends.
Most people I know have cars so we switch...my turn...their turn.

I never use the Sky Train or ride on the Looser Cruisers.

Worse are the people without cars that constantly demand rides. I volunteer once a week and there are three other volunteers there that don't drive. They constantly call or text asking me to pick them up. Once in a while is ok but when it is EVERY FUCKING WEEK....I mean come on!

Good thread!

Seems since I have a SUV I'm getting hit up to drive and help move people's shit. I was just looking at a text from a couple I know who live near downtown and try to be dependent upon transit only. Well they decided to move July 1 and never hired a rental to move their shit. Guess who they contacted?

Clearly they have asked too many times.

I'm suddenly out of town lol.

No rides from me. If a friends car is broken and needs a lift to pick it up at the shop fine.
But if they purposely don't have a car with the goal to save money, they shouldn't be bothering people for rides.
Saving money shouldn't be connected to costing your friends more.

I only give rides:

1) if she's really hot LOL
2) if a buddy is broken down in the boonies
3) to good friends if they know enough to return the favor
4) if their motorcycle is broken (I'll pick em up in the van)

After a night out? Only if it's my turn to be DD. Otherwise my policy is- dude, you're an adult. You knew you were gonna be drinking so have the common sense to plan how to get home on your own or crash at someone's place. Giving people rides under these circumstances encourages laziness and bad behavior.

Worst is people (women usually) who have cars but are always scamming rides so they don't have to pay for cabs or parking downtown. Jesus titty-fucking christ I hate these people.

I had a car or truck for the last 40 some thing yrs..now I don't. .miss it but bus works .

As for when I had a truck my options for working any kind of job was wide open .. I could go after . Construction jobs ... or hauling jobs. And they could be out if town .any where in on the island .. Now I am restricted to what I can reach by bus.. and by how and where the bus runs for most part.

As for people asking me for rides or help moving .. that was all was a given.. I met some friends by doing that as a service ... which I charged for..and even later they usually payed me for some of my time and gas.. Now some couod not afford it ..and I did willingly offer to pick them up and take them to work Many time...that's just my nature... But of course it cost me gas.. and considering the price of gas and I only got like 6 km to a liter of gas .. A little trip of 15 km and. 15 back ..was 5 dollars. . 60 km .is going on 10 dollars..I easily drove 100 km a day..so you can see it was very expensive to drive a pick up...I assume most people with pick up ..up on the same or more depending where the live ..

Of course now that I have no truck .I save 700 dollars or more ..
But I all so don't here from friends and people that need rides..no do I see them much other wise..
That I some thing I miss..I liked be of Service .and enjoy driving ..

Luckily I have a job where I get to drive every day ..transporting cars..but it's not the same as having your own car .

I drive a muscle car with a firm "no kids on the leather" rule. Since most of my friends have kids, they've stopped asking me for rides. :) Success!
