Nother sure how else I can put it .. In nature one eats the other
We have civilized it .. they grow and kill our food some where else. We just eat the bits..

I was down on the waterfront. In victoria today . Two eagles were hunting and soaring on thermals.. eventually they flew off..
Later as the beach got busy with walkers.. In Flys this eagle with a seagull. .In it talons. .Other birds a round ..crows and seagull diving it as it try to finish off the gull..
It just normal day for a hunter.. but with every one looking and kind of supplied ..One lady got really up set . And started screen at the eagle to let it go ..throwing rocks at it .. The Eagle flew off with its pray..and dozen of seagull chasing it..It mate flew over right after..
This is nature it brutality ..and reality..so many people are so removed from what happens all round them every day in the wild..
Killer Wales eating seals... seagulls eating other birds babies. . That is the way it is .

I see things like that almost twice a week.
Right now I have 20 or so eagles in my creek by my house, and they pound those spawning trout pretty hard all day.
I deal with Wolves killing my stock, not to mention the odd Mountain Lion. I'll find countless deer carcasses this spring, as well as a few Wild Horses.
Bears don't bother me much, unless you consider a Grizzly I've run into from time to time, he has his bad days as well as his good days...On a bad one, he just swats the ground and sends some dirt flying...So I just give him some room.
I'm half wild myself,....So I blend in more than most would around here, and my passage of time is measured in seasons....I'm told by friends and family...I have no concept of time.
Your comment on "Just eating the bits"..Rang right with me. We raise your food, and have hidden the messy not so pleasant part of it. Most like the fact you buy your meat packaged and processed, nice and clean and neat.....It's not pretty, and I do hate that part myself,
To have a calf born and raised for a year and a half, only to kill it to feed humans can get depressing.
I kinda look at it as...I'm feeding families, and giving them a healthier, better product. I do cringe a little when I see someone throwing out meat into the trash, but they've paid for it, so I suppose they do what they want.
I geuss if your going to eat meat, and let someone do your killing for you...A person should maybe recognize that it was once a living being, and we should be concious of that, and not just take it for granted.
A predator will risk injury, or it's life getting a meal for that week, then defend it to consume it, then hope it's lucky enough to find another....Then it gets old and dies.
We've managed to take that out of the equasion...and thats a luxury that most forget.

I grew up in a big city in Ontario, and had no idea about the harsh reality of life in the wilderness until I started exploring the back country of BC. I often cried when I'd see dead or injured animals, but I learned to accept that it's survival of the fittest and natural selection at work. When I went to the Yukon, I was amazed by how well nature functioned without human interference or management.

with the size of the sea gulls we have around these parts that eagle had some good eatens. If only they would pluck out the crows a bit more :) I always feel a bit sad when I see an animal in pain or dying. Even worse when its my own cat whos become a professional at plucking out birds in my yard and then bringing them to me, as if hes got some grande gift !! Cats are hunters by nature and do it just because they can and not out of need or hunger. Its all a pleasure kill for them.

I hate it every time I recieve a new gift yet I undertand how thats just what he does. I tired to save one bird and brought it to a bird rescue place as one of its wings was injured and when I called to check up on the little bird I was informed that it was put down... Really pissed me off as I would have bought a cage and tried to help the little guy myself had I know that they werent even going to try !!!!!

Another time my cat caught a really little mouse and i managed to get the mouse away. I just so happened to have a little hamster cage in my house so I placed the little guy in there for safe keeping. Sadly He didnt make it either but for the last few days of his life he definitly ugraded from homeless outside somewhere looking for food to a mansion will plenty of food, water and a warm bed. !!

I have a really hard time when I see an animal in pain.. I have watched so many horrible documentaries on just brutal and disgusting slaughters, all of it moves me greatly. A dead animal on the road shakes me up if I see one.. Im surprised Im not a vegatrian although I do eat mostly vegetarian food.

I was a vegetarian for years as a kid though. I did understand the concept of fishing as I grew up fishing all the time with my parents.. Fishing bars were my playgrounds as a kid.. I got pretty good pretty young and I was tought how to gut my own fish ect. So I knew that we killed the fish and we ate the fish.. I didnt know that chicken was dead birds or that beef was dead cows until I got to elementary school in kindergarten.

I came home from school in absolute shock, asked my parents and was informed that the teacher was correct. I then became a vegetarian until i was about 16 ish. I still ate fish during that period but no other meats. I slowly started eating chicken and other meats later on in my early adult years but It was very small at first and I had to work hard on not letting the psychological part get to my head.

I've walked some of the trails around Vancouver, and your crows have no fear....We get the odd one that blows in on the wind from down your way.You can always tell they are "City Crows" because they don't fly away from you when you get close.
The first thing they do is try to steal food from a giant Northern Raven, or a Hawk....It takes a few days, but the Eagles seem to have their number.
They tend to not last that long...One way or the other.

the crows here can be vicious too as I have been dive bombed a few times.. I swear they are so big from eating out of our trash !! I saw one crow rip open a random mcdonalds bad that had been left on the side of road and he gulp back half a cheese burger like no tomorrow

I heard from a vet the reason cats do that is they think you don't know how to hunt and they're trying to train you. The "gifts" are a demonstration, setting an example for you. In the cat's world you're then supposed to do the same in return to prove you got the idea.

Dive bombing Lady-Via.....at least they have good taste!!! :D:D

yeah ... well I think I walked too close to a nest once.. and the other times its because of my cat... My bird killing beast is leashed trained and he will walk on a leash and does enjoy going for car rides and outings. if you see a girl on the seawall with a cat on a leash instead of dog chances are its me lol !! Every time I take him out and the crows catch wind hes out they go nuts and dive bomb us..

I praise you for what you do and all that you provide for us It very noble in a way providing food for so many people so they can go pick up their clean packaged items and not have to think too hard about how it actually came to them.

I used to frequent a friends farm often a few years back as he had lots of land in the back and he would let me light of firworks and target practice with pellet guns and paintball. I would also stop by his pig pen and visit his pigs.. They are remarkably smart animals. I used to bring them treats- fruits and veggies fresh cut up and toss them into the pen and they got to know me. When I arrived on any given day I would nod my head at them and they would nod back at me.. It felt like the movie babe but live in action having a couple dozen pigs all dodding their heads at me :) Sadly I poped by the morning they were being loaded for slaughter and my heart sank a bit as i knew I would never have all their funny little faces nodding their heads at me again or looking so happy and excited to see me.

I heard from a vet the reason cats do that is they think you don't know how to hunt and they're trying to train you. The "gifts" are a demonstration, setting an example for you. In the cat's world you're then supposed to do the same in return to prove you got the idea.
I heard that too actually although I think my cat has learned that I dont appreciate the killing some how.. last summer I woke up and there were feathers all over my livingroom. Right away I thought omg where is the bird.. I leave the doors unlocked often in the summer ( I know its bad ) so my cats could go in and out... Well I searched the house and no bird.. So I made some coffe sat on my couch with my lap top and was actually crusing around on here at the time when I saw this little bird hop across my living room floor.

I had to give my head a real shake and take a second look but there it was just bouncing across my living room floor. My cat actually walked right by it as well. I got the bird outside and either the very next day or the day after I had a whole repeat of the bird jumping across the floor !!! I guess he brought it in the house but purposely didnt kill it ??? No clue. I dont know what happened to the bird as I never saw it again after the second time.

I also thought maybe that bird might have been a person or something in another life re incarnated that had some relation to my cat Like that snake on the internet who refused to eat that one hamster and they became friends.. Imagine they were brothers in a past life and the snake looked at the hamster and thought to himself " shit did you ever get the short end of the stick "

We are separated from nature and especially the food we eat because of industrialization. This hurts us as individuals in so many ways and most importantly in what we eat. I believe in the premise that we should kill something that we are going to eat. I have only killed, gutted and filleted a fish. I know many haven't done that. I think that slaughtering a chicken would be insightful for me.

Thats the part I still struggle with sometimes as if I dont deserve to eat the meats provided because Im a coward and can not kill the animals myself.. I crab fish smelt fish and salmon fish still among other fishing and Im ok with it all as like I said before I grew up doing it..

I grew up on a farm and we either raised or hunted/fished for the majority of our meat and grew all of our veggies. I knew grocery stores existed, but couldn't completely understand why when I was young. I didn't/don't have a callous attitude toward killing animals for food, just saw it as a necessity. The most important part of it all was to make sure they were properly taken care of and treated well while they were being raised and to ensure they didn't suffer when the time came.

(snip)I do cringe a little when I see someone throwing out meat into the trash, but they've paid for it, so I suppose they do what they want.(snip)
I know what you mean! For a time I worked in close proximity to the grocery industry and the amount of waste is disgusting. Tossing out food because of a date stamped on a package or a small imperfection on a piece of fruit/veggie is almost criminal. My parents would be appalled. They both grew up in the "dirty thirties" during the depression and learned not to waste anything and reuse items until there was nothing left. My mother used to darn my dad's wool socks and patched play clothes were the norm. Yes, we had 'play clothes' and 'good clothes' and 'work clothes' and you didn't mix them up. I think if more people lived a more simple, basic life; even for one summer, they would have a better understanding of how things really are rather than what we perceive them to be. In other words; there isn't an never ending supply of everything we need/want and taking care of what we have and using it properly can be very beneficial.

this thread reminds me of when I was a little kid and my grandfather used to butcher live chickens right infront of us... The "halal way" too, draining blood slowly... I grew up seeing cow and lamb carcasses hanging and being butchered almost every year, and still receive the meat for eid gifts every year. I don't really like the flavor of this type of fresh wild meat though, especially the chicken I always hated it. Probably tastes better elsewhere though lol...actually it wasn't always chicken probably a rooster or something, that one is grosse!

Now if I see something get killed or dead I can't handle it I'll have a major panic attack and feel extreme empathy, I remember I held my dead rabbit as a kid and thats when it hit me...I was shaking so hard I dropped it on the ground because I realized I was holding a dead rabbit :(

Jesus what a retard. Does she think eagles normally shop at the local supermarket or breaststaurant when they get hungry.

aside from pets and those in zoos, not many animals will die of old age.
