Now there's an oxymoron for you: "Internet Privacy". Ha! But I do have a real question and pardon me if I seem like a fool for asking...

Hypothetically speaking if I were to use another person's internet connection with my own laptop and even using Firefox's private browsing would they, somehow, be able to track my internet activity?

I may seem super paranoid but with my recent activity on this site and others like it I'd like to know I'm under the radar from unsuspecting civilians. Thanks to anyone with know-how out there :)

Yes they (the owner of the internet connection) are absolutely able to track your PERB activity without touching your computer. This may require some knowledge and specialized software. But it is possible. There are how-to guides on the internet, the person does not have to be an uber hacker.

If you feel the person is clueless about computers (and didn't get help from an expert), this is unlikely.

If you have a concern, there are some solutions that encrypt network traffic so it cannot be intercepted by the connection owner. E.g. TOR Browser, or Open VPN. I am not sure PERB mods approve of using any such product though.

The private browsing helps against leaving trace on your computer, UNLESS (and that's also a possibility) somebody managed to install a tracking software on your computer - some kind of keylogger (which may be record your keystrokes, grab screenshots of your activity etc.)

Thanks, guys. I don't think anyone is "out to get me", but was just wondering if they'd be able to see my Internet traffic if they were looking for it. I think these people are nerdy enough to figure it out considering you guys have said it's not that hard to do. Just a case of wanting to keep my Claire and real identity separate.

LD how would I be able to check my router?

Hi Claire

Being more a Mac guy vs the PC guy, I tend to use apps specific to Airport Extreme and Mac OS.

Here is one that I have looked at because I was concerned that I was paying for Shaw's Hi Speed but felt I was getting mediocre speed.

You can look at IP's visited per device on the system with this tool. i.e. find out who is sucking all your BW away from your Modem.

While we`re on the topic, why doesn`t https://perb.cc have an SSL certificate?
