Yeah saw that. Strange cause Linden was on Tim and Sid, and talked about how the new GM would be the one picking the coach, and how important he thought that was. I guess the new GM can pick anyone but Torts.
Perhaps pressure from unhappy season ticket holders. Who knows.

Linden did say in his introduction press conference that he would evaluate the coaching staff by talking to the players.

Last season after the Rangers lost to Boston in round 2, all indications were that Torts would be brought back. But Sather and his staff met with each player after the season ended and a few of them threw Torts under the bus. A few days later, Sather turfed Torts. That's kinda the way it works in the NHL now. One way or another the players are gonna decide a coach's fate.

Interesting to see if the new coach is the sexy pick, the substance-over-style pick, or one of Linden's old cronies.

I think we can safely rule out Messier. :fear:

So how much will Torts get paid to sit on his ass? .
I wonder if they did something like.....

We will pay you your $2 million a year for the next 4 years, but you won't be able to work, and after 4 years nobody will hire you since you been out of the game so long.
Or option 2, we pay you $3 million cash, you go away. You can sign as a coach elsewhere tomorrow if you like.

I heard that he got a $5M buyout.

How ever they worked out the firings, it will have cost several million.
Lots of money down the drain.

So now they wait to see which coaches get fired in the next few weeks, to become the Canucks new coach.
They should just offer Roy $5 million a year, to leave Colorado.

Did Roy ever have a year bcneil.

Remember his first game he went ballistic and tried to go after Boudreau. Everyone thought he was going to be a gong show all year. Couldn't have been more wrong. He was cool and collected all season, great in the room and great with the young guys, of which they have many.

Canucks should be so lucky!
I vote that the Canucks get Jim Benning for GM and then if Todd McLellan gets let go, then him for coach and hopefully he brings Larry Robinson along for an associate coach.

That's not entirely true about the NFL. If they sign a signing bonus, they have to pay that. A guy in your hypothetical scenario would probably get 60 million guaranteed.

The NHL is loosely guaranteed. It is, unless escrow kicks in, to which they then lose money. Also, there's the compliance buyout this summer, too. I think teams should be allowed to have a compliance buyout every year. The way it is structured, players can be the ones who benefit.
Doubt 60 millionif the player in question was smart and didn't have a agent who has "you can call me slick" on his business card. he'd be lucky to net 10% just ask Ryan Leaf or jamarcus russell.
Looks like guarantee money can account for a big chunk of the total value of an NFL contract, says here that Jamarcus Russell had $32 million of his $61 million rookie deal guaranteed:

http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/...cially-Signs-Richest-NFL-Rookie-Contract.aspx

And Earl Thomas has $27.7 million of his $40 million deal guarnateed:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...rl-thomas-contract-extension-seattle/8425287/

It all depends on what's negotiated though I would think, looking at deals like Darelle Revis' pats deal.

I feel the same about Benning Borko, just not sure about Mc and Robinson. That combo hasn't been able to do it in SJ with more talent than the Canucks ever had. They would definitely be an upgrade to the Torts/Sullivan combo. Will be an interesting next few weeks.
I think McClellan and Robinson coach a good style of hockey, are good at developing young guys (important with the draft picks that the Canucks have made recently that they turn out as well as possible) and they are at least consistently making the playoffs. The cup win thing is good, but Tortarella is a cup winning coach and he flamed out here. Robinson has a bunch of cups as a coach (devils I think) and a player with the habs, but also sometimes a coach just isn't in the right situation like Joel qenneville until he got to Chicago and Sutter until he got to the kings.

I'm a little sleep deprived, so, I might regret this post later on. What do you guys think about the chances of Ovechkin being traded out of Washington? Washington needs to blow up their core as it's not working. Ovechkin is looking like he can't be the guy. So why not move him? Which leads to my delusional tiredness:

What would you think the odds are of Ovechkin getting traded to Vancouver? I'm guessing Kesler would have to be involved. Who else would they have to include? Edler? Shroedoer? A future #1 pick?
There is literally no chance of Alex Ovechkin being moved. One players cannot win games, it's McPhee's damn fault for never building a capable team around him and Oates' fault for making him shift wings because of his weird obsession with wingers having to play the same side the shoot from.

It's about as reasonable as asking how probable it would be to move Crosby. It's not going to happen. And if it did, there is literally no package of players Vancouver could put together to get him.

The Great one got traded(yes I know it was before the cap era) So Ovechkin getting traded is plausible. Not sure if he'd ever show up here? My thinking on Kesler is that if moved, they'll get prospects and picks, that being said in todays cap/ntc world, it's pretty hard to move a big name player, just look at the Luongo fiasco.

Playing in the Rangers division (Atlantic) I watch Ovie play a lot and while he can still score goals, he is no longer the 'thoroughbred' who can go coast to coast on any given shift and score highlight reel goals. He's pretty much a guy who posts up in the slot and hammers one-timers and slappers - mostly on power plays - to get his goals. Defensively, I cannot believe how lazy this guy has become. Numerous times this year he was caught on iso dogging it back up the ice and the guy he was supposed to be checking scores.

Plus-minus numbers can be misleading, but minus-35 is dreadful by anyone's standards. Consider that he was a plus 45 back in 2009-10. This guy has simply become a one-trick pony who is no longer willing to pay the price to push his team to a playoff spot. Yep, he will still get you some goals, but at what cost? The guy has basically become a liability 5 on 5, and yes, he'll keep right on doing that in Washington as long as Ted Leonsis owns the team. Oates and McPhee lost their jobs and the next coach and GM will be set up for failure as long as Ovie is the 'leader' of this forever underachieving Capitals team.
