I didn't see a thread on this recently, so I thought it would be a cool idea to have a thread counting down the days until #10 is lifted into the rafters of the Rogers Arena. As of today, we're 4 days away.

I might be a bit on the young side to really remember how magical Pavel was. What I do remember is being a little kid living in SW Ontario during the 1994 run and my uncle (rabid Leafs fan) was completely obsessed with this Russian guy playing on a team called the Canucks. So I suppose you could say that was when I became the Canucks fan I am today.

I cannot wait to go to that game Saturday night and remember all the amazing goals and great years Pavel gave this franchise. Truly a legend and arguably the player with the most raw skill to ever wear a Canucks jersey.

So share your favourite Pavel memories, pictures, video clips, whatever. :)

This is my absolute favourite highlight reel for Bure. It's also made by the best (personal opinion/bias) Canucks highlights channel there is.

So many memories! Saw him live at the old Coliseum many times. One of the few players that could stick handle while skating at full speed! His lateral movement was incredible. His overtime goal in game seven against Calgary in 94. His stick, foot, stick goal against The Bruins. He really was an amazing player, watching him "go for a skate" and just dangle the puck at will. Lots of people didn't like it when he levelled Churla, but I thought it was his coming out in those play offs.As if too say he wasn't gonna take anymore crap from anyone.

The mother of all elbows was the only time I actually remember Don Cherry praising a Russian player.

Glad I got to see Pav play for the Rangers for a short while. Those were crazy times when NYR had Lindros, Bure, Kovalev, Fleury, but still couldn't make the playoffs. LOL at my Rangers then ... and now.

Hate to say it but my favourite Bure moment with the Canucks was when Richter denied him on the penalty shot in Game 4 of the Cup final in 94. Turned the game and the Rangers came back and won 4-2.

OMG, your posts are so amazing. I am not sure whether to admire your insightful hockey comments or oogle your delicious photo's. Are you shure there isn't a guy in that hot body somewhere? I mean, hockey fan chicks are nothing new, and they may even comment on the Canucks jerseys or how Trevor Linden looks in a suit. But to know the game so well, man, I would hang with you during a game like one of the guys, and that is about the biggest hockey compliment a beer swilling hoser can bestow upon a Canadian lady. Just say'in, thanks for the great commentary and contributions.

Canucks should have retired his jersey before lindens. Since bure last played in 2003 and lindens last yr was 2008.

i remember a regular season game against new york rangers when bure and messier were on opposite sides - what a night! i think they both got hat tricks that night, it was spectacular to see those two guys make the opposition look like they were sleeping standing up

i've been told that bure got his speed from his dad training him in hockey sprints when he was wearing a used military parachute for drag. he built up so much leg strength that he could manoevre, stck handle and shoot laser shots all wearing that parachute

all i got to say about the churla elbow is that churla didn't have his head up :D

And of course Toronto fucks up our Pavel retirement game by centre of the universe bullying again.
We finally,,,, after a brutal road trip have home ice advantage and have that taken away for a very early start to appease Toronto Scumbags.
How the fuk can they keep getting away with that shit?
I think the NHL head office should rotate every 5 yrs. TO , LA , NY , VAN etc.
i rufusr to go to the game and would burn my ticket rather than give to LOAF FAN scum!!!

The reason the Rangers couldn't win to get into the playoffs was each of those players were just in the game for the money along with the rest of the Ranger organization. It was like a dumping ground for players who were disgruntled and the only place to go was NYR. Bure as many of you have forgotten, quit on the Canucks over a money issue (sure there are both sides to the story with Quinn et al) but in the end it was Bure who quit us. It seems to be a Russian thing IMHO; you can name off several excellent players from that country that play or played in the NHL and have the $$ as the prize and not playing as a team and winning it all. The exception to this is Igor Larionov who left the Canucks so the Canucks did not have to pay the Russian Federation any more money.

I probably stand alone here but stand by my thinking that Bure's #10 should never be retired.

Linden was drafted as a Canuck and retired as a Canuck and was their Captain during the 94 Cup. His #16 deserves to be up there with the rest of the other retired numbers.

Pat Quinn made a slimeball move by telling Bure the dollar amount in his contract was in USD (standard for NHL contracts). He was lying, the amount was actually in CAD which was about $0.60 to the dollar. So he kind of fucked Pavel out of 40% of his income which was something like 900K at the the time.

I'd be pissed off too.

So shouldn't Bure's anger towards the Canucks be placed at the feet of Ron Salcer his agent at the time? It was Salcer who recommended he sign the contract and should have checked the box that said USD not Canadian Dollars? He did have the option of saying NO I won't sign in C$. Very PISS POOR Agent is the problem with that deal. This is the reason Gillis became Bure's agent and this is the reason Bure's number is going in the rafters. It's Gillis's way of making things right for Pavel.

Bottom line, this guy had extreme amount of skills, disliked the attention from the fans and hated being said hello to in public (I said hello to him on Robson Street and got zero back i.e. Don't talk to me look from Bure) and he acted like a spoiled child to get out of Vancouver once he realized he had signed a contract in C$ not USD. Quinn and George McPhee did screw him but a contract is a contract. Read the small print then sign or not sign and say "hey that's not right, this should read USD".

Regardless, I still stand by my words - his #10 should never hang in the rafters. He quit the Canucks and no other number up in the rafters has that baggage attached to it.

Not many people remember this , but Bure actually gave $50,000. OF HIS OWN CASH to play in the NHL on his 1st contract. The 'nucks weren't willing to budge anymore so Bure said i'll throw in my own money too play.
In those days the Russians would pay to leave the Soviet Union. Bure wanted the NHL first and the Canucks were the smartest team to grab him. Bure would have paid regardless who he played for in the NHL

Larionov left the Canucks so the Canucks didn't have to pay the Federation any more money. He was a player with honor.

The Sedins steal the show. $28/4. I think its a fair deal, especially if the cap grows over this time, as they expect it to.

A lot of the way he was treated lay a the feet of Arthur "the Boybarian" Griffin and his lust for a NBA team and need for cash to bankroll it. He should have coughed it up the difference. MaCaw just didn't care. IMHO

Interesting too note the Igor wasn't keen on playing in Vancouver, he said that he wanted to play in Montreal. Canucks were one of the 1st teams to get a Russian(Calgary got Sergei Brelin?) but the Russian hockey federation promised that Vancouver would get a top line Russian. If i'm not mistaken Canucks ownership greased the wheels by providing Victor Terasov access to medical services in Vancouver. The rest is history with the 'nucks getting Larionov & Vlad (the hotdog) Krutov.
