It is a toss up.

Some can because the breasts become so engorged that the nipples just pop out on their own while others require a bit of manipulation to get the infant to suck on it until the nipple relaxes and the baby can help with feeding. This is all from a personal experience from a close relative's spouse. The mother really has to relax during the whole process.
