So you dial the number of a common company. You get a recording, stating that the number is no longer correct and, for a corrected number, dial #2030 on your mobile phone. So you do and, from there, you get a recording, stating that this the Mobile Directory Service, and you are asked to stay on the line until an operator is available. When one arrives, you tell him/her the city and company you were looking for, voila, you get the new #.

But this is not the end of the story.

At the end of the month, you receive your cell phone bill. It shows a charge for 4.99, with a reference to #2030. Your memory just isn't that good. What the heck is a #2030, you ask yourself? You call your provider and (don't be too shocked) they have no idea what that reference even means. After 30 minutes on the phone, and many arguments from your POV that you shouldn't pay for a call/service that they can't verify, they agree to give you a refund.

I finally got to the bottom of this, when I innocently made my second call to #2030 and finally, everything added up and I was able to put the full story together!

True story...this is the new service offered for the mobile world. But nowhere, at anytime in the process, are you advised that there will be a charge for this service. Never mind 4.99 per call.

What do you think? I'm considering a complaint to the CRTC...I don't mind paying for services that I want and/or need, but I should be advised that a) there will be a charge, b) how much the charge is and c) that I can hang up now to avoid the charge, or proceed if I am OK with the charge.

I think they have forgotten how the consumer feels about negative billing, and they need a reminder.

What do you think?

Story update:

So I heard back from the company that I made my complaint to, MDF Directory Assistance. They left me a voicemail to say that they would refund my $4.99 if I would send them a copy of my Rogers bill, showing the charge. If anyone has experienced this situation, I have the address in Calgary where I was instructed to send the paperwork.

I'll keep you posted, whether I receive the refund, or not.

Meanwhile, has anyone experienced this yet? You dial a number that is not in service (NIS) and get a recording that tells you to dial #2030 for assistance...

Clearly, this is a huge issue, across all providers...

(I was reminded about this thread when we got to discussing passion in another thread. I am passionately against companies taking advantage of innocent/ignorant consumers)
