I understand the importance of teams getting everybody signed within the limits
of the salary cap.

here's where I am confused....Boston Bruins recently signed Jerome Iginla to a contract
that,I think, guarantees him approx. 1-5 or 1-6 million.
the report also said that there were bonuses in the contract that could enable him
to earn as much as 6million.

now, I was under the impression that bonuses also count against the cap.
if that is the case, would the Bruins be in a potential position where, late in
the season,if Iginla is going to earn his bonus(es) say for goals, points, games played, whatever,
the Bruins are going to have to dump salary from somewhere to pay him?

I think I must be missing something here and I'd be grateful to anyone who can enlighten me.

I believe they are allowed to have bonuses, that for the team total up to 7.5% of the cap.
If a player or players make their bonuses, any amount that goes over the cap, counts as a penalty the next season

Teams that go over due to bonuses are penalized the following year

I think they are doing that because there are estimates that the cap will go up to $80 million in 2 years.
Boston seems to being going for broke this season. Or they better hope the cap goes up fast.
If they do end up paying out $4-5 million in bonuses over the cap, they are left with a cap of $59 next year if it doesn't increase.
They have 7 forwards, 2 dman, and rask, with contracts that extend to next year or further, with ntc. These 10 men alone have eaten up almost $51.
$8 million for the other 13 guys.

Funny you should say that. A lot of teams now employ someone specifically to deal with the machinations of the salary cap. I know the Rangers do. It's highly complex. The teams at the ceiling need to be creative to get under the cap and open up some $$$ to sign a player later in the season. The lower budget teams have to make sure they are at the 'floor' of the cap, so there are times they'll have to sign a guy or swing a deal to take on more salary. I'm guessing the players union insisted on having a cap floor in the CBA negotiations.

Isn't that Gilman's job with the Canucks?

Probably Borko, but Gilman also does a lot of promotional stuff too though. For example, he comes here to Penticton to promote the annual Young Stars Tournament in September. Some of the wealthier, 'cap ceiling' teams have guy(s) whose portfolio is salary cap only. Not sure how it works with the Canucks.

Yeah, they called him a capologist when they hired him after he was out from the Coyotes:
