When I left my province of birth, I couldn't wait to get away. Winter, ugh! Friends, whatever, I'll make new ones! Sometimes I would look back at old photos and think, oh yeah, this person or that person, I remember them. But the thought never went any deeper.

Then comes Facebook and, eventually, wondering about my old high school. Honestly I've barely thought about these people for years.

As the list of 'friends' grew, talk of a high school reunion surfaced. Sheesh, what do you do, if you don't recognize anyone when you get there?

Has this happened to anyone?

Someone saying, OMG it's you, it's so nice to see you, remember when we...? And you're like, ah no................who are you again?

On my 20th year reunion (and having been absent from all the rest before that), what happens is this: everyone looks at you, and you look at everyone.
Many of my male friends have greying hair, or balding badly, and almost all have paunchy bellies if not outright huge bellies. They have families, so the years have taken a toll on them. I escaped the years without grey, all my hair, and my belly still flat, and I'm often mistaken for being 10 years younger.

But that's nothing compared to the women, who almost all (except 1 or 2) look very aged. Many are just plump or outright fat, have sagging bodies or sun-damaged faces. The caucasian girls fared the worst (all were overweight I might add), the one black girl and the few east indian girls did alright, and the asians did the best. Almost all the girls were housewives or had careers they were attempting to restart after having kids. You could tell children was what their lives was really about - and once they were leaving the house, what an empty shell of a life they might be having. I wondered how many got fucked on a regular basis anymore by anyone, let alone their husbands.

One guy brought an unbelievable attractive much younger woman with him. He was not known for having had any success with the girls when he was younger, and there was no reason to believe he had changed much at all when he was there. We all suspected she was "paid for". We were embarrassed for him.

The saddest part is the old girlfriends I had dated, who were at most 4 years apart from me. I would never look at them twice today, for they seemed like old aunties now. Was I ever glad I never got serious with any of them for it may have led to something permanent and being stuck with that. I looked at them and they looked at me, and I can tell you surely that our thoughts were far less than symmetrical of each other. Worst of all in some ways was that my girlfriend of 4+ years, who was there, is almost 20 years younger - and not that it necessarily means I've done anything exceptional because it's actually a "relationship" - as challenging as any other, but that for some life is cruel and unfair - especially if you're female.

I did the 20 year reunion and that was enough for me

Guys who were my friends in school and did not go to Tech School or University were handed plum jobs in their father's businesses and thought the reunion was specifically designed to flaunt their "self made" success. After a few hours of listening to them talk about their vacation properties, ski boats, their multiple vacations yadda yadda yadda. I sarcastically commented on how the the 'school of Daddy' is a very impressive institution and without that nice little leg up from Daddy they would probably be riding the back of a garbage truck trying to make ends meet like other uneducated peeps. Could have heard a pin drop.

One old girl friend (check that - fuck buddy) thought I was being unusually harsh on these guys. I had enough and asked her if other dancers at the Marble Arch were also lucky enough to marry a successful stock broker? She made a quick exit since she thought her little secret was unknown :D

Needless to say, it was time for BBB to get a cab ride home and put a close to that chapter in my life.

All in all a memorable night.

playfulalex, just go. i went to an informal 25th year reunion. i had a pretty decent time of it. yes, a lot of both men and women hadn't aged well. very few looked good, actually. there wasn't too much bragging about money and possessions and when the topic started heading there, i excused myself and joined another conversation. it was good to see some of those people that i had lost touch with. some i still keep in touch with here and there. you'll find a few someones to have an enjoyable convo with. have fun.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, scorcher...I'm giving it some thought...maybe I'll make the reunion part of a summer adventure. ;)

What the heck, go, see, and leave. I went to one and it was ok. People seemed much as they were in high school. The jocks were still jocks and the class clowns were still telling jokes. I think the atmosphere of a reunion sorta plugs us back into the rolls we had in high school regardless of where we are now. Like going home.

I noticed that a core crowd are loyal reunionists and probably attend every one of them, and there are the fringe folk, like me, who pop in once in a blue moon,

I did manage to meet a lady I have known since elementary school and never really hung out with, and it turns out we have tons in common and chat a lot on facebook, so that was great.

The fellows at my renunion looked pretty care worn, but all the women looked like they just stepped out of their high school grad pictures, minus the seventies hair LOL...

I went to both my 10 year and 20 year reunion. the 10 year one was interesting because everyone seemed to fall back into their same behaviours from high school. An interesting sociological experiment, although I pretty much just hung out with my core group of friends, who I had stayed in touch with anyway. The 20 year one was informal (think cocktail party instead of formal dinner) and much better. People had moved on in their lives, and therefore all of the old cliques from high school meant nothing anymore. It was a fantastic time mixing with folks who I hadn't even thought about in many years.

Just go. If you don't like it, then leave. At the very least you'll have a funny memory that you can chuckle about later. If you bump into someone who acts like BBB says he acted, turn around and talk to someone else.

So, since you would have been around 38 for your 20 year reunion, you took your 18 year old girlfriend, whom you've been with since she was 14? I know there are some sick fucks on this site, but jesuschrist...

LOL, when in the process of returning from Japan, someone found me on facebook and then I was flooded with invites for a reunion scheduled a few months after my planned return. I even hooked up with the person that found me but so much had happened over a couple decades that I haven’t seen that person since.
I ended up bailing on the reunion with no regrets.

I only setup a facebook account so that close friends/family in Canada could see certain pics from Japan but I'm not really the facebook type.

So if you live on facebook, I'd say go and enjoy.
If like me, you just haven't gotten around to closing your account yet, then don’t bother with the reunion.
Wait a second... Do you live in Japan?

I reluctantly went to my ten year (ten years ago), and then witnessed one of my ex-classmates set fire to minivan in the parking lot, high on mushrooms. A lot of us were on mushrooms. He stripped naked and did some spooky fire dance in the middle of the street while the cops pulled up.

Our 20 year is coming up... Cant wait!

wow. I bet you were SUPER popular in highschool. Sounds like you should still be in it, Most people grow up and appreciate others for more than just how they look as life and age happens to all of us.

With facebook, why bother? The only real reason (imo) to go to a reunion is either to hook up with someone you wanted to nail in high school and couldn't/didn't, or to show off how much more awesome you are then them (i.e. you make more money, are hotter, have a nicer car) also known as "e-peen".
Wow, you can learn something new every day! Thanks, MissyM
