Just had the flu over Xmas, felt like a truck hit me. Last for about 4-5 days. Dr told me drink green tea, chicken broth, gargle with warm salt water. And get some Tylenol 2 or 3 if your headache and body aches are severe. Gravol helps to put you to sleep so you can recover. Save the vit c for when you feel a bit better. Lasted 14 days from start to finish.

I haven't been sick in 5 years. I avoid touching public surfaces like the plague, and that's what has helped the most...

when I feel a flu coming on, I'll usually do light aerobics like a 45min brisk jog or a game of pick-up bball, eat veggies and fill up on fruit juice.
the 1st and 2nd outing is a hard go mentally, but by the 4th and 5th, I feel re-energized and the flu is almost gone. works like a charm.

Then you don't have the flu. Influenza is a viral infection, the only thing that "cures" it is your immune system being activated and doing what it is supposed to.

The symptoms of the flu actually is the effect of your immune system doing it's thing.

If you could eliminate the normal symptoms it would mean that your immune system is no longer functioning and you are probably going to die.

There are two anti-viral/flu medications you can take on the early onset of flu. Relenza and Tamiflu are effective reducing the severity of symptoms and duration of illness. In addition to those medications, I usually eat lots of hot and spicy soups to hydrate and sweat it out. Pho with hot chilli pepper will do the trick:)

Those are only clinically effective within 48 hours of infection. After that there is no statistically significant measurable efficacy. Allmost noone can get diagnosed in that time, or even knows that they are infected. Those drugs are only useful really as prophylactics for at-risk populations.

To the OP.

Take the "cure" if you have the balls to do so.

Clean your bathroom sink very well.
After cleaning it fill it up with hot but not scalding water.
Mix a couple teaspoons worth of vinegar into that water.
Cup your hands and scoop that mixture and snort it up your snot locker and snort it out.

This hurts 100 X worse than a slurpee burn!!!!!!!!...but it cleans you out.

OMG I can't believe all the 'home spun' remedies you people are touting. I haven't had the flu in years and every time I even suspect I am getting sick I do the following:

Fill your bath tub with hot water, not so hot that you can't get into it, but hot enough that you have to take about 5 minutes to 'ease' into it (it's all part of the process). Have a small glass half full of room temperature Jack Daniels Whiskey sitting on the edge of the tub. Now, after you have managed to get yourself under the water just lay there. What you are doing is increasing your body's temperature and creating an artificial 'fever'. As the water cools down keep adding hot to maintain the heat. Approximately every seven minutes take a sip of the J.D. This will eliminate any flu viruses attempting to escape the slow death provided by the heat of the water, also it will help eliminate any flu viruses in your lungs as the savory flavour and aroma are traveling throughout your airway as you continually imbibe this wondrous all curing elixir.

Gee, I'm feeling a little 'off'. Must be the flu coming on. :D

And washing hands 5 to 10 times a day helps out a TON!

ANytime you touch any public surface, wash your hands as soon as possible. I also use paper towels when touch gas pumps. I noticed people that take transit to and from work get sick a lot...

^^ +1 to that!

if i get on transit and some asshole is coughing and sneezing and polluting the air that the rest of us have to breathe, i'll change cars at the next stop if it's skytrain or even buses if it's real bad

i'm thinking of carrying one of those paper masks in my brief case so i can make an obvious show of taking it out and putting it on right in the face of the coughing, sneezing asshole... maybe then they'll get the hint

I can't believe you say this after thinking more. Very irresponsible! Re-think what the OP says!

And want to know the disgusting thing? I'm pretty sure I got this cold from Fitness World. My mom was recovering from major surgery and I was taking care of her. I'd go to the Fitness World by her place on some downtime and it was so disgusting. Once I'm better, I'll probably find a new gym to workout.
Pretty sure it isn't the gyms fault you got sick. It is that time of year.. PERIOD. You should wipe down the machines before and after you use them anyways, plus proper handwashing would help eliminate a lot of risk. I use Steve Nash Fitness World myself and haven't had any illness issues.

My vote goes to all sick people to wear those masks they have im dr. offices and hospitals if they want to venture into public. It would cut down the risk even more because most of them seem to be too stupid to cover their nose and mouth when they cough and sneeze.. And into the sleeve no less.. Covering with a hand just spreads it because they will touch something before washing 9/10 times... Gross!

It is not irresponsible, when people think of the flu, it is not the infection they notice, it is the effects of their immune system cleaning up the infection.

If you are not showing symptoms you are going to die eventually (once you start to experience systemic damage as a result of massive cellular infection), because the normal signs of illness are actualy signs that your immune system is working. This is the reason why most viral infections (and many other sorts of infections) have symptoms that are "flu-like".

People think they can cure or accelerate the passage of the infection by taking medications or various home remedy snake oil treatments. This is totally false. The only way virus is eliminated from your body is through action by your immune system. If your body can't do this, or you suppress your immune system in the misguided belief that you are "curing" the infection, you are going to die.

There are drugs for treating influenza infection, they work by slowing the growth rate of the viral infection to give time for your immune system to kick in (there is a lag period). The fewer infected cells around when that happens, the less severe the symptoms are going to be. After your immune system has kicked in those drugs do nothing because your body is in cleanup mode at that point, and is vastly more efficient at suppressing viral growth than any drug.

All of the things on the market for the flu are not for the flu at all, they are to make the symptoms more bearable. They do not make the infection pass any faster than it would if you took nothing, if anything, it is more likely that you are extending the infection than anything else.

Well, I always take the proper meds. So why am I not dead yet?
