We'll see if Romney can keep his foot out of his mouth for a change. There is a lot a stake for Mitch tonight as plenty of undecided voters will be curious to see how he handles himself.

If voters can't decide by now, they probably won't be voting anyway. Either "a pox on them all" or "huh?" would basically define them.

So far, Romney is hammering away saying he is the Champion of the Middle Class. hmm? Trying to work on Obama's "base"?
The truth is out there somewhere. $7T as in Trillion WTF? $5T in taxes plus $2T for the Military even though the Military haven't asked for it?

I am lost in the numbers with this debate. Totally moving the goal posts with every subject. Romney has not owned one thing that he has said for the past year.
Middle Class for me is the 50K to $150K range but for the USA, I don't have a clue.
I pity the voters who have a real stake in this election. The seniors, the middle class, people who require Obamacare etc etc.
It was like Obama was trying to pin Romney down on details on his platform and he would pivot and go in a different direction on some small biz owner he spoke to in St Louis.
I just wish for once the moderators would say "answer the fucking question and quit changing the subject!"

Obama played it safe; Dem's internal polling must have him up by more than the 7% the polls say....or he's sandbagging and rope-a-doping. I think the expectation was pretty low but Romney was very aggressive and poised. Lehrer got steamrolled. He did not moderate very well.
More than once, Obama said "if you actually believe that... yadayadayada on whatever topic they were discussing (deficit/tax cuts, etc)...then Romney is your man or he is your candidate. I did not think that approach was very effective at all.

I fully agree that Romney won the first round and looked the more determined Presidential aspirant. But remember there are 4 debates which includes Biden and Ryan as well. However, Obama's Rope-A-Dope strategy reminds me of that famous " Rumble In The Jungle " fight between Ali and Foreman in '74. Big George Foreman came out smokin' in the start but Ali brought out his A game during the later rounds. And the outcome is history. In political strategy, you do your damage the closest time to the election. Watch for Obama to throw 47% more punches in the next debate and bring Romney to the Cayman Islands.
We'll see. There is plenty of strategy in these things and it made sense for Romney to leave it all out on the table. But Obama's more passive approach sure seems to have given Romney some much needed momentum. I, and a few others, watched this and found Romney came off looking like "Michael Scott" on the office. Many of his comments were comical.
Don't mistake energy for intelligence. Obama came out of it looking pretty cool and pretty wise.

Well the consensus in the media (and through opinion polls) was that Romney came off as the clear cut winner. Intelligence and actual substance only counts for so much in these things. It comes down to perception and someone who is assertive and poised can end up looking pretty knowledgeable.
It is not a matter of who is smarter. They have different political agendas and know how to present them...especially around taxation and healthcare. It comes down to whose plan is better and even though I much prefer the Democratic agenda of eliminating the tax breaks for the wealthy, he did not do much to promote that plan.
I can't believe Obama didn't hammer away more at Romney and the tax breaks he wants the wealthy to maintain. Even when Obama talked about the tax breaks that oil companies get, Romney turned the tables very effectively to comment that while he is also in favor of energy efficient initiatives, Obama has given tax breaks to companies like the bankrupt Solyndra that would amount to 50 years worth of tax breaks for oil and gas companies. Those numbers could be a pile of horse shit but he said it authoritatively and Obama did not have a rebuttal.
And I did not like that even Obama is now referring to the healthplan as Obamacare. He has huge room for improvement in the next round.

Its still the color of the skin, I work with a lot of black people and its taboo to ask who they will vote for cause if blacks don't vote for Obama they are considered a sell out. Its hopeless, no matter how much Obama has borrowed and screwed up it doesn't matter to colored people cause he is one of them.
My reaction to the earlier segment of their debate was UNDERWHELMING. I was somewhat disappointed in Obahma's initially tentative performance but was totally unimpressed with Romney's numerous SMIRKS with that pasted-on idiotic forced smile. Maybe Romney was overacting to his coaching staff's probable direction to "smile more" and be "pleasant"! But the perpetual smile, when not smirking, seemed SO PHONEY and purely contrived that I couldn't take any more. I hit the power button and went back to my book.

Romney "won" the debate hands down - as presidential debates are more about style than substance in the US which is fed a daily diet of reality TV.
But, a thinking person only has to do the arithmatic and realize that Romney cutting Big Bird ($450 million a year) from the federal budget is not going to pay for 2 trillion in additional defense funding.
Funny how Republicans/Romney talk about the deficit; yet they still find more ways to spend more money.
