Hi, I was wondering if there's stats out there on how often men get HIV from unprotected sex? The reason why I'm asking is if in the future I get a GF, is doing bbfs still risky even though we're both tested negative?

Thank you

Hi screwu123

It can be difficult when looking at stats with HIV because it really depends on what type of sex you are having (different types of sex pass HIV easier) and who you are having sex with (what are the chances of them having HIV).

If you are just after general stats we have lots of information in our annual STI/HIV reports. Here is a link for all the reports.

To answer your question there would be no risk for HIV if you both tested negative.

The current HIV test in BC has a window period of 3 months which means it can take up to 3 months for a HIV test to show a positive result after you got HIV.

Provided both you and your GF had a negative HIV test 3 months after your last partner or other risk and your not doing anything that puts you at risk of getting HIV from outside the relationship(unprotected vaginal and rectal sex with other partners, sharing injecting drug use equipment etc…) you can have bbfs without any risk for HIV.

Thanks for the answers! so I guess the only way of currently receiving HIV is by getting it from someone who is HIV infected? That's interesting to hear.

I am not sure what is going on today but I have had to remove two members for a month for responding in this thread. It is obviously labeled question thread and thus only to be answered by the Health Nurse.

That’s correct.

HIV cannot live outside of the human body so the only way to get HIV is by coming in contact with a bodily fluid that has a high level of HIV in it from a person who has HIV.

The Bodily fluids that have this high level of HIV are blood, semen, vaginal fluid, breast milk and anal mucus.

You then need a way for these fluids to get in your body. Common ways this can happen are with unprotected vaginal and anal sex, and sharing injecting equipment.
