The "social web" is all part of this so-called Web 2.0. Facebook is front and center of all that.

Do you like Facebook?

The only reason I use it is because others use it and they only seem to want to contact me on it - for that reason, the only practical utility it has is convenience, an unnecessary convenience at that.

Now after having had an account for awhile, I can concretely conclude that it is:

1. a narcisstic tool used primarily by young females to tell the world about useless information about their lives, like what they ate for breakfast. Why they think anyone else cares is beyond sanity.

2. a combination dating site / stalking tool

3. a waste of time

4. a waste of bandwidth

5. run by amateurs

The first four on your list rely on whether you have interesting friends or not.

The fifth is simply not true.

"With more than 750 million members, Facebook’s population would make it the third-largest nation in the world. It has citizens, an economy, its own currency, systems for resolving disputes, and relations with other nations and institutions."

Amateurs? Not a chance. Zuckerberg had $13.5 billion last year at age 27. You don't make that kind of money on a lucky break, let alone in under seven years.

Facebook sells your information to govt intel contractors and corporate dataminers all over the world. There's a reason it's worth 900 something billion dollars, and no not for advertising. Use it with a fake name and contact info, and not your real pics. Your friends already know who you are no reason the world has to.

Everytime you apply for a job, file an insurance claim, anything you can guarantee somebody is hired to get all your facebook information. Protip: making your profile private is meaningless since you can just buy or steal it from all the 3rd party dataminers.

Facebook also enables easy identity theft. If a fraudster get's their hands on some of your data (hack restaurant POS, dig through trash, steal mail) they can use fb to get all your info. Those 3rd party dataminers can be carded to give up your info and all your family links, birthdays, addresses everything or just simply go through their friends list and ask people 'Hey, when's Karen's bday again I forgot to buy her a gift' bingo. Now go get $20k worth of fraudulent loans and credit. Facebook should die. Use twitter it's like fb lite with less corporate data mining and no real names

Hello, JC. Not to be a douche, but instead of "I'm ambivalent about it, I use it but I could care less if it disappeared", you should have written "I'm ambivalent about it, I use it but I couldn't care less if it disappeared".

I don't care much about Facebook myself. Seriously, who cares if your status update says "I'm so bored", or "Off to the toilet".

It's hilarious! some of the shit people say on there, it's cheap entertainment.Like everything though, you need to do it in moderation otherwise you'll be on there all day(just like perb) lol.I like it,cus i talk to my buddies in the trades, guys working in the 'patch' & get the latest news(gossip) from them.
I do get a lot of strange friend request on my hotmail acct? I just report them as spam though.

facebook is great for keeping in touch with friends, family and business contacts, especially overseas.

Some people seem to spend their lives on perb, so it's all degrees of moderation and interest.

Now Twitter - that's a fucking waste of time.

I like using facebook for the fact that it keeps me in touch with family and friends.

Linked In for professionals is the way to go if you really need to put yourself out there. I use it to keep in touch with other professionals and it has benefited my business a lot.

I have a FB account but rarely use it. If people need to contact me they know my mobile #, email and that's all they need.

Weird thing about FB is I have a few close friends in the USA in another 'hobby' or 'industry' whom I have become friends with in person ten years ago. Once I added them as friends on FB, I had like 100 requests from total strangers to be their friends too. Seems like people just like to accumulate 'friends' to have yet another to their list. I saw one guys profile and he had 3000 friends. Come on???

Twitter is for vapid celebrities who can barely put together a sentence.
Granted FB isn't perfect, and people can get annoying on there, but ever since I sat down one night with my "friends list" and deleted about half of them - people I barely knew, or couldn't stand - I found it's been a great tool for getting to know my friends a little better. And also, like its been said, it's a great way to keep in touch with people you never see....

I don't think you're being a douche at all. In fact, I appreciate corrections on grammar or English usage because we all could become better communicators and more exacting in our language.

You're not correct though. Normally one would say "I couldn't care less...", which is essentially the same as "I could care more"; that would be English usage following rules but misapplied. The context is that "it disappeared". In other words, you are saying - "I could care more that it disappeared". You could? You mean, you are able to but didn't even though you know you should? So you should care that FB disappeared? Why?

"I could care less it disappeared" - literally means that I already care too much more than I should. If you answered the above questions as I expect you would, then isn't what I said meaning what you meant directly?

Put another way, we don't care much about FB - and in our opinion, nobody should. But as I put it, I could care less thus I care too much already. As you put it, you could not care less so in other words you can care more, meaning you really ought to - contradiction to nobody should care.

Perhaps I could have been far more clear: Facebook sucks shit. I added the "shit" in there because suck can be a good thing, but sucking shit surely is not.

I have a fb account, check it maybe 3 times a year if even that. I tried to actually use it once to get in touch with some old friends from Banff when I was going to be visiting Calgary, and huh what do you know, they dont use it either lol.

I don't do facebook I haven't in almost year. I don't see the point on focusing on other peoples lives, when people should be focusing on their own. I also don't see the point in posting about your own life on the internet so people can know every move you make and every breath you take ... I think thats a song lol

Pretty much pointless. The people I want to know about my life do and vise versa and I don't need to post it on a social media site.

:thumb: I feel exactly the same. I find its great for stalking, if that's your thing but not for much else.

I wouldn't put it past them. I try to limit my exposure on the internet because of the relative ease for people to get information, if they know where to look and how to hack. I won't even bank on the internet and do very few merchant transactions. I enjoy my anonymity.

I totally agree. If people want to talk to me, they can e mail me or use their mobiles for what they are actually intended for, PHONE CALLS. I'm actually surprised to hear a female in your age group say that because every one I know without exception is on facebook to some degree. (That statement also made you a little more hotter in my eyes too ;) )

My favourite quote about Facebook comes from Entourage when Vince asks E about why he isn't on Facebook he says (somewhat perplexed for being asked) "uh, because I'm not a 14 year-old girl" :p

It's a waste of time....Perb is where the winners hang out! :high5:
Hunka nails it.

There is little difference between Perb and Facebook other than the general nature of what is being discussed and the company (online or not) members prefer to keep. PERB is just as much 'Social media' as Facebook, save for a slightly different interface and billions in revenue.

For example, people go on Facebook and tell their friends about their kids, their job, the dump they took that morning; while people go on PERB and discuss having a finger unexpectedly stuck up their bum.

Same shit, different pile.

I used to like Facebook. But I found that I was on it too much. So I deleted my account.
You think you deleted your account....you wanted to delete your account...but truth be told your account is merely deactivated and all the info/pics etc you entered/posted is still there....facebook is like herpes....once you have it you have it forever.

IMO facebook is a complete total waste of time and more useless than a screen door on a submarine.

I have one...but I just use it to make fun of people's lame posts and pictures.:pound:

The worst thing you can do is post pictures and put up your date of birth.

The only think it's good for is sharing links about the fake world we live in...fake news, fake politicians, etc...
