I have always wondered why in BC people using the left lane have never been taught that the left lane is a passing lane . Is it a lack of driving lessons or self awareness ? Do they enjoy following the surrounding vehicles or copying the driving of blind little old ladies ? Would mandatory driving lessons be the solution ?

What would the same drivers do in the rest of the world and specially in Europe and Quebec when they would be flashed by High Beams to the point of panicking ? Caused by their lack of knowledge (rules of the road) !

Thanks for the feedback

I have given up trying to figure this one out. It really has gotten bad in the past ten years with a variety of drivers either attempting to slow traffic down intentionally by hogging the fast lane or some who just say "screw it, I'm too lazy to move from left to right and I won't move over, period". The ones who kill me are the older people who do barely the speed limit in the HOV lanes. WTF, move over to the right lanes!!

If you drive in WA or OR you will find people do tend to use the left lane for passing and move over to the right lane. Alberta, well 'sometimes' they do that unless you are driving out to the rockies on a weekend. Then its every man or woman for themselves.

Who told you the left lane was a passing lane?

If that were true, the only people that would ever be in it, would be someone passing.

It is just "accepted" that the left lane is the fast\passing lane.

Think I'm wrong? Which lane is the passing lane on a 6-8-12 lane highway?
"Keep right except to pass" it's the law in most States.

Here is a summary:

http://www.mit.edu/~jfc/right.html

I do not believe there is a similiar law in BC. There should be one.

I always move over from the left lane as soon as I have made a pass and the road is clear ahead of me.

If there is a car ahead that I can keep up with I will stay in the left lane until he moves over and I pass him or when I can't keep up with him I will move over.

I'm no saint when it comes to driving the speed limit. I can honestly say that I have NEVER been able to stay under the posted speed limit 100% of the time on any trip, long or short.

I do appreciate that if someone wants to drive even faster than me, it's their prerogative. I'm not the speed police.

Besides they do make the best radar detectors.

Motor Vehicle Act / Part 3 / Sec. 150 : Driver on Right.

Plus crap load of signs on the road, at least on major highways: Left lane for passing only.

Considering the last one I saw was a blonde soccer mom in her range rover doing her eyelashes, drinking coffee, talking on the phone while doing 20 below the limit with the entire road behind her highbeaming her. I dont think she had half a clue. This was coming from west van upper levels to the #1.

Why not just flash them, not with your high beams but your boobs. :clap2:
Drives me crazy too, especially when traffic is very light and two cars are going below the speed limit side by side. Maybe we can all pitch in a buy some billboards... They could look something like this:

And be all over the lower mainland. Prob wouldn't help though since people are that self-absorbed and ignorant....

Maybe we can get signs to keep in our car?

Or better yet:

Ok I'm out of ideas..

If you travel the freeway, Trans Canada, Hwy 99, 91, Hwy 7....there are signs that say, "Slower traffic use right lane"....hence it's a law. Right lane=travel lane, Left lane=passing/travel lane. If you're going too slow in the left lane, you must move to the right hand lane, especially if you're impeding other travellers. How fuckin hard is that to understand? Is it a pride thing, or just ignorance. I tend to travel in the slow lane, when there is no one ahead of me being slower, and if I'm overtaking someone, I pass them in the left/passing lane....then I move back into the right/slow lane....If there is an on ramp onto the freeway, and cars are attempting to merge, I move over if it's safe to do so and maintain my speed as the other cars merging make it safely into the slow lane....

If I am in the fast lane passing people, and there's someone faster than me, I get out of the way....when I can asap safely.....you wanna kill yourself, I won't stop you. When some joker decides that going slow in the fast lane or driving along at the same speed as the other car, basically blocking everyone else from passing both slower cars for miles and miles, I will flash you as a friendly reminder to look in your mirrors and realize you're not the only person on the road, and either speed up or slow down and get over. How hard is that to figure out?

Don't let your ego or pride as a man/woman/driver keep you from doing the right thing. If you're going too slow, and there is no one in front of you, for at least 10 car lengths or more, and there is a vehicle behind you, and you're in the left lane doing the speed limit, please just get over as soon as you can safely. Don't panic, just get over. No one is going to think you're a lesser human, actually the opposite...you did the right thing. Now, please, move over.

Of course, this also applies to city driving....in Vancouver, Richmond....please wake the fuck up and use your mirrors, check your blind spots, put down the phone, and have an idea where you are going, how you're going to get there. Don't turn right from the left lane, get over a few blocks ahead. Pay attention!! If you miss your street, don;t stop and try to make a u-turn, just go around the block....and don't block curb lanes to drop someone off if there is no street parking, for fuck's sake. You're blocking everyone....see it on W. Broadway alot, Cambie between Broadway and King Ed....also, if there is no one coming, you can go. If you see no traffic coming, then it's safe to go, hence if you see a car coming, don't just pull out infront of them, then slowly come back up to speed, if at all. The other thing...what the fuck is up with people who pull out from parallel parking on a busy street, from one space just to move up two spaces on the same block to park?, And again, to block traffic as gimpy tries to parallel park into the new space....what the fuck is that all about?

Please signal, wave if someone lets you in, be aware you're not the only one on the road trying to get somewhere too, and that there are people in the cars and trucks, who just like you just wanna get there....wherever that is. Take it easy, don't panic, don't freeze, traffic isn't scary, just be aware. I drive for a living....and haven't had an accident in all the years of driving that was my fault. Usually someone not paying attention would drive into my work vehicle, twice from the rear, once head-on at a slow speed, thankfully. All three were complete morons, on their cel, texting or in such a hurry that they ignore the safety rules of the road....as with the head on crash, in Richmond. He passes a slower moving truck after being on the truck's ass, he can't see what's coming the other way (me), and decided to pull out on a double yellow line without checking if it was clear, and crashed into me at around 60km/h, combine speed of the collision would have been around 110km/h. Idiot....was still yaking on his cel.

Please, everyone knows the rules of the road...written and unwritten....courtesy, awareness....don't be a fuckin idiot...make proper decisions. Be safe, as you like other drivers to act safely on the road....there, end of my monologue.

A lot of people ignore the yield sign as well...
YES!! Yield means if cars are coming, STOP!!! It's doesn't mean MERGE...or just keep going. Upside down red triangle, means stop! if traffic is coming....

Merge means go like hell until you match traffic speed, then merge into the flow. Not stop, or continue to travel at 60 when everyone else is doing 90. You're going to kill someone doing that....if you can't do that, take the bus.

Most people ignore the "Slower traffic use right lanes" signs. Cause they think they are fast.
If the speed limit is 90, all the traffic is going 110. They think its fine to block the fast lane at 90.......cause they are going that maximum speed, in their mind.

Or course in reality, their attempts to be a safe driver is actually causing other problems. People navigating around them, and passing on the right.
Some people get confused when other cars are merging, so they stay to the left to avoid that.

The problem is that the cops arn't issuing tickets for left lane hoggers blocking faster traffic.
Nope.....the problem is that the cops have no motor vehicle act charge to enforce and prevent you from hogging the left lane unless a sign is specifically posted prohibiting the activity where the driver is committing the offence. It is not an offence in BC to drive in the left lane with traffic behind you.....I know it sucks.....and it's inconsiderate.....but it wouldn't be taught in driving school here since it is not the law.

Completely incorrect legal reference uncleg. Section 150 of the Motor Vehicle Act refers to confining a vehicle to the right half of the roadway....which a vehicle in a left
lane blocking traffic is doing....it is still on the right half of the roadway....this i can
guarantee is not up for any legal debate. BC has no legislation. that prohibits drivers from traveling in the left lane even while blocking traffic with the exception of when signs are posted prohibiting such driving behaviour....such as we see posted in certain places on some bc highways.
It is not so much about a legal problem but for the rest of the world a common practice, common sense and courtesy to others . I know that certain people will think that they are even policing the road, for others it is a sense of entitlement ( they own the road ) but they only cause anger and very dangerous passing and chasing behavior once the people held back can finally sneak around or pass the left lane blockers.

The one that pisses me off is when someone from the slow lane pulls into the fast lane to pass, then pulls up beside the person they're trying to pass and drives along at the same speed, directly beside them.

Or when you try and pass a slow moving vehicle, and they decide it's a good time to wake up and drive 140.

It's frustrating on the roads.

I don't know about that, it basically says vehicles have to be confined to the left side of the road except for...and gives the exceptions. So, it you are not engaged in one of those exceptions, you're in violation. I had a driver ticketed under that section.

what about the flippin' retards that leave one or two car lengths between their car and the car in front of them when stopped at a light or waiting to turn in the left turn lane?

wtf are they worried about... that the driver in front of them is accidentally going to put his car in reverse and smash into their darling honda? :frusty:
