My American friends are so unhappy in general compared to average Canadians even though they have a very good job with very sold financial status. They seemed to be over-worked while taking little vacations. Canadians are happier because we enjoy beer and hockey?:) I see very different cultures between two countries.

Please.

I'm curious to know what you see as the specific cultural differences between the two countries? I grew up mostly in the States, but part of my childhood was in Ontario. Also, I had a place in BC (Whistler) for 10 years. Other then some superficial differences (hockey, curling, college football, Tim's vs. Duncans, high-grade pot, more polite drivers in general), I don't see a lot of differences.

Music. I live close to the border, and Can-Con is a fucking joke, at least on classic rock stations. They find some sucky Canadian artist to cover a classic rock song, so they can play the "new" version as Canadian content. Please.
Art. No differences I'm aware of.
Politics. Used to be differences, seems pretty similar from my perspective now. Most Republicans down here would beg to have Harper run our country.
Militarily. Used to be vastly different. Canada seems to be rattling it's saber more and more now. Under Harper, Canada will be with the US in every war we're in.
The Environment. Your own minister of the environment has admitted (on NPR) how truly poor Canada's environmental record has been the last 10 years or so. Canada will rape the environment to make a buck. Cod fishery, Oil Sands, Salmon fishery, old growth forests, etc., etc.
Fitness. Some differences, but take a look at the national obesity numbers and you'll see Canada is following our "lead".

In terms of happiness, I think that is hard to gauge on a national scale. In Whistler, one of the best playgrounds in the world, leading in to the Olympics, people were generally miserable. Politicians going rogue, high taxes, traffic jams.

I think McCalls had an article about 4 years or so ago about the happiness factor, so I assume they have some data in the article to back it up. But, I think it's just a matter of time. Keep following the US "lead", and Canada will trend to our happiness level as well.

Especially as big corporations are treated as preferentially by the body politic as they are here.

You said it in your first paragraph - high pot.

Really I've always seen us as doing everything Americans do while desperately trying to not be Americans. Otherwise I'd say we're just a little bit more laid back with a bit better ability to take ourselves not so seriously - but even that I find dwindling somewhat in major centers or dealing with people from big cities.

Whenever I travel Europe or Asia, I meet many Canadians and Americans. Canadians are really enjoying the trips while Americans usually complain about many things!

I know! Like Lenny Kravitz covering "American Woman." Oh, wait a minute, I was confused....

Actually, I can't think of a single example off the top of my head....as far as I know, sucky Canadian artists have always recorded their own crappy songs.....

well pardner... only difference that i can see is that all-important difference in pooning laws: canada - semi-legal; us - illegal except in some counties! that's about it... :)

Very excellent point!
I rather have a bachelor party in Montreal than in Las Vegas!

We don't have our flag stuck on every second outhouse.

I would say that is a pretty big difference.

We seem to have a lot fewer nutcases as well.

So let me get this straight, fewer flags on outhouses would make our national happiness quotient go up? I'll pass that around to the boys. Didn't know it was that simple! Just let me ask the question to you, isn't all this chest pounding about how much happier Canadians are, isn't that a little like putting up a Maple Leaf? Remember the winter Olympics? Lot of national pride on display. Are we really that different?

Really, the biggest difference that I can think of is probably Canadians are always comparing their country to the US. "Well, at least we're not them." While in the US they don't make that comparison as frequently.

In terms of # of nutcases, how would you back that up with numbers? Serial killers preying on prostitutes? Yep, Canada has had them. Killer cops covering up to protect the brotherhood? Yep, Canada has had them. Drug related gang wars? Yep. Crazy wives killer their sisters for their husbands? Yep.

I am not knocking Canada. I loved living there, would happily do it again. Canada does has looser enforcement of marijuana laws, and pooning. Ask Mark Emery his perspective on that. My point isn't to knock Canada or Canadians. It's really to lament there isn't (from my perspective) a greater difference. And the biggest point I make is....look at the trend. Canada is following our lead, and it isn't a good thing.

On the music side, I may be wrong. I've been hearing lots of bad covers on the radio lately. Rocky Mountain Way is a song I recently heard covered on a Canadian radio station. I assumed it was because of Can-con. I didn't mean for "sucky Canadian artist" to sound inflammatory. God bless Canada for giving the world Neil Young, Pamela Anderson, Rush, etc.

If you want to see the differences between Americas and Canadians, rent John Candy's "Canadian Bacon" or watch a few old episodes of Due South.. a Mountie assigned to the Chicago Police Dept.

To generalize.. Americans take them selves much too seriously.... Canadians do not take them selves serious enough...

But we are really, really sorry about Bryan Adams and Celine Dion. Sorry again. Please excuse us.

Oh, yeah, and sorry about being overly apologetic. Sorry again about that, too.

and how about the Biebs?

I googled "Canada apologizes for", he was about 8th on the list, but I imagine he'll move up in time.

It is not judgemental (well, ok, it is), but the observation reflects the fundamental difference in attitude across the border.

I know this is an old thread, and the OP was probably just trolling. Anyway, today I heard one crappy can-con redux (Triumph's Rocky Mountain Way), changed the station, only to hear another crappy Can-Con redux (Big Sugar's Please Mr. Fantasy). Both are super poor cover's of the original. I had to change the station to country (shudder).

ps. Googling "Canada apologizes for" shows the Beebs has moved up 1 place to #7
