Drive was very good. I had to close my eyes through parts of it, since I never ever see movies with any violence. I saw the movie because a good friend recommended it. While it's not the sort of movie I would normally see, I thought it was very well done.

I liked Hanna, but I don't think it was quite good enough to be placed in the "best of 2011" category.

Shame was ok. It had some good moments (the acting was strong, especially), but I was unimpressed overall.

Any thoughts on Melancholia? I heard it was good, but I haven't seen it yet.

going off of this list...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_in_film

top grossing: deathly hallows, not because it made a bunch of money, simply because the rest of the top grossing movies were utter dogshit

in no particular order.
The Adjustment Bureau: It was kind unevenly paced, but when it comes to hollywood films a little originality goes a long way. To my knowledege it wasn't a re-make, re-boot, or a re-imagining of any kind it was just an original idea that somehow managed to become a movie.

Rango: For no other reason that Johnny Depp is a treat in just about anything he stars in. The quiet nods to Fear And Loathing in Las Vegas made me giggle too.

I Saw The Devil: Korea, as well as the French are making some of the best horror films out there today. and while it isn't hard to do, putting hollywood to shame, in the process

Kill The Irishman: i think this is on netflix, not really "the best" per se. but a gangster film that doesn't involve a hip hop artist trying to parlay his fame into movies.

Hobo With A Shotgun: nuff said? ;)

Super 8: Imagine the Goonies fucked E.T. and didn't pull out in time. Super 8 was that coming of age tale that totally caught me off guard. Along with Planet of the Apes, a movie that stood out amongst a very tightly packed schedule of summer movies.

Contagion: Ever since I saw this one, I carry Purell with me wherever I go. right up until the final shot, a chilling movie. Along with Christopher Nolan and David Fincher; Stephen Soderbergh seem to be the only 3 guys who take film making seriously anymore.

Red State: "people just do the strangest things when they believe they're entitled. but they do even stranger things when they just plain believe."

This Kevin Smith film holds a dear spot in my heart for me. If you consider yourself a child of the 90's chances are Kevin Smith's movie Clerks was your bible. Red State comes out of the gate a bit shaky and tends to pander a little, but a humble cast, weave a tale of religious fanaticism that makes it hard to tell just where it's taking you.

Michael Parks performance as a hate mongering preacher just thrilled me right the fuck out. (FUN FACT: all of Parks' singing is improvised) John Goodman plays an ATF agent faced with some tough decisions was equally as kick-ass. This is truly a movie with absolutely no redeeming characters at all. At a screening at the Vogue Theater in August a member of the audience called the film completely "condom-off" and I don't think there's any better way to describe it.

Meloncholia: Director Lars von Trier is an odd duck. That being said Meloncholia is the best movie of 2011. The film's star, Kirsten D
unst and her shitty teeth won best actress at Cannes for this film.

If you have a loved one who suffers from depression or bi-polar disorder watch this film. Not only will you get a better grasp on understanding what it is they're going through, von Trier also found a way to capture the world as it is from the eyes of someone who is deeply depressed. I found every frame of this movie was an intimate and very candid glance of what life for me is like when i'm at my absolute worst.

five worst bait and switch in 2011 (without the commentary)
Tree of Life
The Thing
The Rum Diary
Thor/Captain America
In Time

worse than over-time at the glory hole
Zoo-Keeper (or anything with kevin james for that matter)

honorable mention
Moneyball
the descendants
paul

Hmmm... I liked:

-Thor
- Crazy Stupid Love
- X-men first class

Sure there is more, but it's all I can think of right now. Hanna was ok, but it turned out to be a theme that was done many times already, so it lost some points for me. I won't say what it was to spoil it for ppl. :p

The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo

My two favorites for 2011 would be " The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo " and " Moneyball " with the inspirational " The Mighty Macs " as Honorable Mention.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is so dark but freakin' awesome. I love it. Looks like the real SLEEPER coming into 2012. Made more money ( 28% ) in its 2nd weekend of full release which is rare. The adults are just starting to come out. Daniel Craig's non-James Bond bombs like Cowboys & Aliens and Dream House might finally come to an end. Plus, Rooney Mara is just a 1OAK actress and human being. Founder of the Faces of Kibera. Looking forward to the 2 other adaptations in the film franchise in the coming years.

Forgot to mention my two other romantic comedy favorites for 2011, Natalie Portman's " No Strings Attached " and " Friends With Benefits " of Mila Kunis. Some say Hollywood has run out of ideas with the similar themes of both movies but they're both cool and funny. :) :)

Here and There
Change up or The change up (can't remember) was hilarious. Moneyball and Contagion were decent, I think they got the best out of what they were trying to do, but they were never gonna be great with those subject matters imo worth the time to watch em though. Didn't get to see alot of movies this year.

My two favourite video stores closed down. They had old movies, foreign movies, documentaries, all sorts.
Where does one find them now?
Best Buy has apparently set up rental kiosks in certain 7-11 and Mac's stores. There's a site where you can check if there are any in your area. Although, I doubt those kiosks will feature the types of niche market videos you mention. If you're in Vancouver, there's still a Black Dog Video on Commercial Drive. They might have a better selection for your tastes. Sadly, videomatica is no more. But I hear their inventory was donated to a university and may be available through them some time down the line.

Also, check your local libraries. They do have some videos that can be borrowed.

Edit to note: Black Dog also has a location on Cambie.

Thanks. I haven't had much luck finding sites on line.I always seem to get pages of ads. I should check out some bit torrent sites I suppose, but it was easier to walk into a store and look at the display to get an idea of what was on offer. So far I think a lot of movies have disappeared from video stores which aren't going to be so easily found on the internet.
Here's more info about the Best Buy kiosks:

http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/kiosk-movie-rentals-for-less.aspx -- if you click on the proceed button, you'll get redirected to another site. I think it was there that I was able to see where the kiosks are located. I believe that some Safeways have had such rental kiosks for a while as well.

I think many people are now doing the netflix thing. Cineplex.com also has a subsection of their site dedicated to the online purchase and digital download "rental" of movies. For older movies, you can also check YouTube. They even have some stuff up for free viewing.

"The Way" is very good, kind of a low key release, but it is a great movie. It is hard not to be bitten by the travel bug after this one. My only problem with it is Charlie Sheen just became it's biggest supporter/promoter.
