Hi fellow environmentally consious members and cyclists. I am putting a proposal to the City as my Social Sctivist group is meeting with the Mayor in the new year.

My part is to put some drawings and a plan together for putting a bike lane along Broadway from the UBC end all the way to Burnaby. The one thing I think I need input on is on which side do I put the bike lane. Currently there are 6 lanes along Broadway, 4 driving lanes and 2 parking lanes. The plan is to eliminate one of the parking lanes and replace it with a bike lane separated with barriers and planters like what you see downtown.

I have 3 options 1 is to put it the bike lane on the North side that way as the day progresses the sun will always shine on the bike lane from the direction of the sun. The 2nd option is to put the bike lane on the South side but I do not see any advantages on this options. The 3rd option is to put the bike lane in the very center of the street and have cars drive along the North and South side of the bike lane.

What do you poeple think is the best options and what are some advantages and disadvantages?

We are hoping that the Mayor can get the City Engineering department to start work by the end of 2012.

It should be on 10th, NOT Broadway. There is already a bike path on 7th. Does moving it 2 blocks make much sense?

Silly meaningless poll, when you leave out the most logical solution....NO BIKE LANE ON BROADWAY.
But I am sure Fudd knew that.

I applaud cyclists in this city, riding in this yucky weather and with deteriorating level of driving on our streets!

Not sure I see the value of adding bike lanes on Broadway when there are bike routes on both north and south sides of Broadway.
Poor business owners on Broadway, the writing is on the wall for them...

Oh you mean the capitalist fascist nazis? I am sure Fudd has very little concern for them or their employees.

There are already designated bike routes on 7th and 10th (I know, i've used them when I rode to and from work). Traffic barely moves along broadway as it is. Creating a bike lane will cause more environmental harm than good by jamming up the traffic even worse. What needs to be done, at least as a temporary solution until skytrain is extended, is make the bus lanes in effect from 7am-7pm instead of just during rush hour. Then allow taxis and motorcylces to use the bus lanes (but no stopping).

Talking about skytrain! Holy shit! I drove to Coquitlam today from Vancouver along the highway 1. What the fuck? Messy lane lines. The worst highway! Luckily, there's no vehicle on the left lane. Otherwise, accident! Fuck translink for making the metro city worse than before! Definitely cannot call this a metropolitan city!

Fudd, you can't be serious... you'd be laughed out of city hall, even with that retard, Robertson, as mayor.

As others have pointed out, there are bike routes on 7th and 10th. Why would they shut down a lane on Broadway? Was this thread created as an (unfunny) joke?

That highway is a construction zone right now. The lines are repainted in different spots quite regularly.

d) NONE OF THE ABOVE

I'm for health, I think bike riding is great and has it's place. For those who choose to bike to/from work, good for you BUT the vast majority of this city choose not to. The bike lanes in downtwon are a disaster and cater to such a tiny part of the population that it's criminal. We need to fix/enhance the transit system by leaps and bounds before we ever get to looking at dedicated bike lanes.

As for Broadway, ARE YOU NUTS? makes even less sense than Dunsmuir! Broadway is already a bogged down route and you want to screw it up even more.

It's clear you're passionate about your cause. My constructive suggestion is that you work on building your "interest group" (i.e. those that actually use what is already there). When other see a bike lane that is busy we'll be a bit more sympathetic to your desire to screw up more traffic....

This thread has to be a joke. Either that or very dishonest.
Fudd wants to take a poll, to use as data with his meeting with the mayor.
He has intentionally left off the NO bike lane option.

Why? Cause for Fudd, this is not an option he agrees with, so therefore not a voting option.

Now when he goes in to see the mayor....

"Yes Mayor, I have even done some non-scientific internet polling. Looks like about 2/3rds want the bike lane down the centre, with the rest thinking a north lane is best"

Sure sounds better than......

"Yes Mayor, I have even done some non-scientific internet polling. Looks like 90% of people are against the bike lane completely, because there are 2 running parallel on 7th and 10th already.....however the 10% that want it, 2/3rds want a centre lane....."

But the truth doesn't work well with what Fudd personal wants. So he ignores it. Very dishonest.

For the love of God, do NOT put it on Broadway, use 8th or 10th! The Broadway corridor is jammed as it is, especially near VGH and can not take a bike lane.

curious to hear Fudd respond as to why he never put in a no bike lane at all. Maybe i should start a poll here: seein the town of princeton no longer is allowing atvs on the kettle valley rail trail im looking to ride my atv somewhere, maybe down the south side , north side or center of broadway, which do u think would be best.

My guess is since vision van is in charge, he's following what the people of city of vancouver is favoring. Simply said, the people of city of vancouver is favoring vision van which favors bike lanes. So, he's asking you about where bike lanes should be put. Now, you all don't want bike lanes. So, why the hell in the first place you vote for vision van? Again it reflects that people in canada just talk the talk, but they don't walk the walk. That's you people's morality and the consequences of all your actions are making the city worse. :) Ironic, eh?

Not everyone who thinks a bike lane down the middle of broadway is a bad idea, thinks ALL bike lanes are a bad idea. I think bike lanes are a good idea, if done correctly.
I have been to European cities that have very interesting systems. Proper bike lane planning in Vancouver is what is needed. CIty planners....engineers......computer analysts....this is how that is done. Not by clans of treehuggers, with the primary goal of reducing cars. Fudds idea has nothing to do with easing congestion.

I honestly can't think of many worse places for a new bike lane than the middle of broadway.
Even the current mayor will know this is a silly idea.
