"A mother living in Detroit has traded in her four-bedroom home for a 2006 minivan.

"LaWanda Flake, a 36-year-old, disabled mother of six traded in her four-bedroom, three-bath house, located in one of the city's better neighborhoods and valued at $96,000 for a 2006 Chevrolet Uplander with 85,000 miles, valued at between $5000 and $8,500.

" "I had a lot of good offers, some from out of state. It turned out I took one of the first offers I got because I felt like it helped us both," Flake told the Detroit News. "They needed the house more than anyone I spoke with. They kept telling me it was a blessing to them. I really feel like I made a good decision."

"Flake said she posted the house offer on Craigslist..."

A minivan may be worth more than a house in Detroit. With a minivan, you can leave Detroit.

Where do I get these houses for $3600 and $4000?

people fail to understand that the house market in Detroit is dead, i know people who bought houses for 2000 to 5000. i know it is crazy, but this is Detroit.

I watched the video clip and man alive that is just nuts....hell one of those shitholes would still sell for $700,000 in Vancouver just for the land....and the buyers first intention would be do demolish the house and put in an infill.

I won't give up on Cleveland just yet. In fact, Cleveland reminds me of LA Clippers Coach Vinny Del Negro who went up from playing penny slots to the high roller table with the arrival of Chris Paul. Eastern Ohio is just starting to become the next oil & gas boomtown with the prospected billions of fossil fuels underfoot in the Utica Shale. Estimated at 5.5 Billion barrels of OIL and 17 Trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Acres of land that used to be worth US$ 200 to 300 per acre are now going for US$ 2,700 to 3K per acre. Plus, about 17% oil royalties from your backyard. In fact, there's gonna be a GOLD rush in Eastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania quite soon. I foresee Cleveland being what Calgary is to Alberta.

Very happy with this development especially for Ohio's economy. Like North Dakota, you'll see people losing their jobs and houses all over the US to suddenly having their second wind in life and making 100K a year. :)

Remember BUY low and SELL high as what they say OR like what the great Gretzky said; " Don't go where the puck is but where the puck is going. " ;)
