I just got back from 5 days in the 2nd biggest city in Russia St. Petersburg. Here is my insight for anyone wanting to go to that city and by themselves without help of tour or local.

1. The ride to town from airport- The taxi ride is about 1200 to 1300 ruble or around 40 bucks US. There is no such thing as fixed priced as the offical taxi stand claims. One driving wanted around 80 bucks to town, I offered 25 to start and most will accept 40 as lowest cost. They kind of get pissed at westerners who try to beat them at their own game I noticed.
You can take bus than subway for under 2 bucks to town at your peril of getting mugged and having all your travel possession gone, though I highly doubt that will happen. I get the feeling the subway and bus is just as safe or safer than any US big city. I should have done that actually. Next time if there is one.

2. Bring your antacid or stomach ucler med with in your suitcase. The first day I got stomach acid build up and virsus and spend the night at the public hospital via ambulance. Total cost was 96 USA bucks for ride, food, all the test, bed, x rays, EVERYthing. The Russians have 2 systems public and private hospital. I chose public and slept in the hallway with 4 to 5 other patients, the bathroom didnt even have a mirror. When you get the bill you will overlook all the incovience of a Russian public hospital.
The drugstore are like China's you cant touch the merchandise, you have to ask for stuff like asprin, ex lax whatever. You have to ask and they person most likely speaks no English.

3. Bring your walking shoes, its will take one day or two and you will be sick of taxi drivers that you much rather hike than pay the non metered price.

4. Dont bring a empty suitcase thinking you will be buying clothes, gifts back home. In the city their is no such thing as Cheap shopping. Everything is cheaper in the states if you are in the St. Petersburg from jeans to nice shoes forget it just go window shopping. No clue whether this applies to the suburbs or small russian cities which I much rather see next time.

I felt safe everywhere I went, I can only speak for that city but leave all the sterotypes about Russian mafia, xenophoia at home. I'm asian and they dont look twice at you cause youre from somewhere else. Its a fast paced city, everyone is busy.

It's a gorgeous city, I felt more "at home" in St Pete versus Moscow. It's right on the sea, is very cultural. Not sure what Honda found but, despite restaurants advertising Visa and MasterCard, 90% of the time the credit card machine was broken and only cash was accepted....

I heard that Russians HATE Asians. I mean absolutely loathe them. Did you find that to be true?

100% false, I saw Asians walking with Russians and its 2011, that skinhead and nazi crap is way in the past in the Russian Federation.

i was there way back in 1989 when i was 14. school sponsored trip. hit moscow, kiev, leningrad (name back then). museums and tombs were the main attractions. not a real fun thing for someone that age. best thing was back then the hotel we stayed in had a mini casino with about 30 slot machines and a couple other games (the multi shelve push the quarter with the paddle game). the russians didn't care about our age so one night we all went down and played. surprisingly one guy won a couple hundred dollars. figured the russians back then would have rigged the machines to only pay out a minimum amount.

Are the streets filled with beautiful Russian women? I have heard the women there are all drop dead gorgeous and it certainly seems so when viewing the Russian dating sites.

I here the food is pretty good

The women are quite gorgeous Laurel. It's always dangerous to paint with a broad brush but I find in general European women care about their appearance more than North American. Even the not so well off ones make sure they have decent shoes :)

The food, is variable I'd say. Very average for everyday type places. To get a good meal I feel you pay more there - affected very much by the new rich....

I like the average looking ones over there. The supermodel ones are not my world since I dont look like Tom Brady. Something about those sharp eyes and sharper features that are striking. As for the food, I tried it twice and gave up. The portions are so small that I paid like over 20 bucks for a meal and still got hungry. I thought Russian food was bland, the opposite of my favorite food-Spicy Western China food.

My thought is if its really good, there will be a demand, Go to Las Vegas visitors all over the world. I dont think I have ever heard of a demand for Russian buffett.

So I ended up eating Subway for lunch and than at the Same Chinese restaurant every night.
