Order of BC for individuals achieveing high level of achievement and individual excellence. and Gordon Campbell is getting one. Let's see his achievements: bringing new and raising taxes, fast track the Canada Line with his friends for the Olympics, spending millions for BC Place, giving out gold medals to contruction workers, closing court houses, closing schools, giving himself a pay raise, freezing minimum wages for 10 years, cutting corporate taxes...yep he deserves it.

You forgot being convicted of drunk driving while in office, tearing up legitimate contracts,
presiding over the highest levels of child poverty in the country,
piling on the largest debt in the history of the province,
BC Rail scandal,
doubling health care fees,
short-changing school boards,
a carbon tax imposed no matter if there is no public transit availability,
almost eliminating park wardens,
depriving BC parks of funds,
charging for parking in parks,
tripling homelessness over a decade,
cutting back of home care,
Allowing Kevin Falcon to appear in public,
Basi and Virk payoffs,
never fulfilling a promise of care beds for the elderly,
not consulting the public on major issues,
not replacing judges,
cutting sheriff staff,
lying about imposing the HST that drove him from office in disgrace...

And that's just off the top of my head.

Yeah, very worthy recipient.

-our income taxes are the lowest in the country.
-Canada Line was a much needed transportation project. Have you been on it lately? Packed!
-as for BC Place, it was either spend money to fix it up or spend money to tear it down. The $450 million is for alot more than the new roof. The insides are all new. It is now a world class facility for sporting events, concerts, and trade shows!
-as for closing schools and court houses, i'll agree there were some bad decisions there, but in general keeping open an under-utilized facility is a waste of our tax money.
-nothing wrong with cutting corporate taxes. It attracts businesses to BC which creates jobs instead of chasing them away.

Yes, the minimum wage shouldn't have been frozen for so long, and I agree with Cock Throppled on all the Parks related stuff. As for the debt getting bigger.....there was a HUGE worldwide economic collapse. I think we weathered that pretty well. The only way to avoid the debt going up like it did would have been to cut spending on services like we've never before seen in this province. And that would have probably been counter productive. When the economy is down the government should spend to spur the economy along.

The way you guys talk about Campbell, I could go to the same extreme and call Adrian Dix a communist who wants to take away all of our rights and tax and spend us to bankruptcy.

Well, he was one of the longest serving premiers in BC history who won three successive elections to the office. While you might not regard him in high regard, obviously enough people in BC did. The Order of BC is intended to recognize public contribution, so I don't see how it could be considered inappropriate.

There is a higher standard if you're in public office.

If you don't want the attention - don't run for public office. Simple as that.No diferent than being a celebrity - if you don't want the spotlight on you, then fuck off and go pump gas.

As for recognizing public contribution - political success doesn't always mean much. Stalin held office a long time. So did Mubarek and Ghadaffi and the Shah of Iran. Only one other premier was given the award.

You could argue any premier is making some kind of public contribution.

During his decade he did more harm than good to the people least able to defend themselves like the elderly, handicapped, poor, addicted, students, low wage earners. That's not much of a legacy.

More politics. He gets in not long after leaving office. Yeah I've tried the Canada Line. Took me almost 1hr to get to Richmond (but went via 99bline) from Metrotown. Driving there and back varies 15-25 minutes, depending on traffic. He pats him self on the back for fast tracking the RAV Line (3 in 25 yrs) while Hong Kong' MTR has 10 lines. (that's another arugument).
Took money from ICBC to help pay down the debt. Spend billions to expands roads while charging Carbon Tax.

Yes Hunk while there was a hug economic collapse the Liberals claim they never saw it coming was part of the reason to bring in the HST.
He was a bully. Why else did Premier by-default (imo) Christie Clark return to politics after he left?

i don't understand how it took one hour for the canada line to get you to richmond when it only takes 26 minutes from waterfront to yvr

but i agree that carbon tax is the biggest cash grab ever invented - you can thank david suzuki for that

Jody Patterson's column today suggests that the nomination process has been politicized this year -- not only Campbell, but three other Liberal hacks are on the list, whose only contributions have been their devotion to the Liberal party.

The perception that the process has been taken over by the Liberal machine is sad because previous nominees, and the other nominees this year, are deserving of recognition in the way the the honour is supposed to be given, and this has lowered the value of that honour.
