Guys and photography

Anyway, yesterday has a beautiful sunset down on English bay, so I went down there with my camera to try an capture it. There were quite a few other people doing the same, as usually is the case, but it occurred to me that all of them were males. Why is that? Do women just not see beauty the same way that men do? Is a visual thing, a vestige from our ancestors when males would hunt and and females would gather, so they have evolved to see the world differently?

Cameras are gadgets. Boys like to play with gadgets.

No, it is artistic expression, an attempt to capture beauty the eye sees. Most people don't do it of course, but of those who do, women either don't see things the same way, or they don't want to preserve it (or they express it differently when they do). That difference sort of interests me, what exactly it is.

Perhaps it was just coincidence that you noticed mostly men taking pics that evening ?

There are plenty of famous women photographers, painters, cinematographers, directors, designers, interior decorators.... etc. etc.

One could easily make the argument that women across the board are more sensitive to issues of beauty and aesthetics compared to men. Of course there are general forms of expression from feminine to more masculine.

No, I go down there to watch sunsets a lot since I live close by. 90% plus of the photographers are men. It is rare to see a woman doing it.

DeeTee is right - it's a gadget thing. Most people taking photographs are more interested in the latest model of camera and its specs than taking great photographs. Look at Craigslist and how many guys are selling cameras that came out last year to upgrade to the newest version or getting rid of something because, "it doesn't fit my needs" - which is another way of saying, "I want to buy more gear" because I 'm bored with what I've got. Most photographers are nerds who can talk your ear off about the bokeh on the new Canon lens, but couldn't tell you who Dianne Arbus, Cindy Sherman or Dorothea Lange are. Anyway, sunsets are pretty boring and an overdone subject - a true creative mind seeks out and appreciates beauty in things other than sunsets and flowers.

photography is a solitary act for the most part and I think
men are more comfortable to be a lone in public than a woman.
it's just an observation.

Many years back I moved from the west coast mainland to east coast Vancouver Island. One of the first things I noticed was I missed out on the sunsets.
