For all those transplanted Montrealers and lovers of a good smoked meat sandwich you will be rewarded next October.

I was walking the Sea Wall in W Van today and came across the W Van Summer Festival on Argyle between 14th and John Lawson Park. The had some food tents, wine garden and of course arts/music etc.

Of course I sampled the Smoked Meat sandwich and it was amazing :D

So if you are a lover of smoked meat, poutine and other unhealthy food items there will be a Dunn's on the corner of Robson and Seymour in October.

As an ex-Montrealer, I prefer Ben's (closed in 2006) or Schwartz's smoke meat. Dunn's is just ok, IMHO.

I have to agree with Wilde. As an ex-Quebecer, I would ALWAYS stop at Shwartz', when in Montréal, for the most awesome smoked meat sandwich in the world. Dunn's is merely OK in comparison.

Good news, thanks for sharing that badbadboy.
This will be interesting to see if Druxy's (Toronto) will follow through on their possible Western expansion. Not sure how they compare with the other Smoked Meat specialty shops mentioned earlier. Great smoked meat sandwich places are rare on the west coast.

Schwartz

There is something special about Schwartz, I always laugh at the reaction people have when they see the place for the first time.... that's it? Every time I am in town, I take friends there, and they are surprised at the line-up (pretty much always a lineup outside see-> http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/981/normaldayatschwartz.jpg ) to how it looks inside (not very big maybe 75-100 seats, and older looking place), to how the food tastes! (awesome!) But going there, the people also make the experience!

Inside schwartz-->

I will always remember one of my first times at Schwartz's, when we got in, found a spot at a table. From then on the people working there are a show by it's self... I mean our server that day was a 60+ jewish man, who was funny as hell, (he didn't think we were when my friend asked for a menu, he did a double take, and pointed to the large menu board on the wall) Awww the good times walking on St-Laurent Blvd, in this area called the McGill ghetto) the area is filled with restaurants, and bars.

Funny to say, Schwartz is by far the most iconic, Dunn's has grown to be much larger, as they do have a few different locations around town, and I have noticed them in many malls also in various cities... Also you can normally get a pretty good smoked meat sandwich at many smaller less well known deli's around Montreal.

OOO and for those of you that look at what you eat.... take a look at what I found on Dunn's site... I don't want to count the slices... for those that like them with alot of fat... O BOY don't tell you doctor!

OMFG!!!!

1070 mg of Sodium. That's a recipe for high blood pressure!!!

http://www.ehow.com/about_5040786_effects-highsodium-diet.html

Sodium and health problems

The biggest risk of a high-sodium diet is the effect it has on blood pressure and heart health. Hypertension/high blood pressure, heart disease and kidney failure are some of the long-term effects that can result from long-term, high-sodium intake. In the body, sodium is processed by the kidneys. However, when a person eats too much sodium, the kidneys cannot process all of it. The excess sodium ends up in the bloodstream. Because the mineral retains water, the volume of blood in the body increases. As a result, the circulatory system has to work harder to pump the blood. Over time, this added strain on the system can result in heart disease and kidney failure.

I have yet to find a good bagel on the west coast but will try the seagels bagels sometime this week . Thanks Goo for the advice .

I would like to mention that Schwartz in Montreal is on La Main ( St-Laurent ) which is the neutral zone separating the east and west side of the city . Never heard that it would be in a ghetto of any kind but will double check tomorrow in case that I'm wrong with a family member living a few blocks away. I suspect that it's a McGill student expression among themselves.

We can still appreciate the best of both world ; fresh salmon, smoked salmon and friendly/cozy restaurant with the best smoked meat that even New Yorkers keep demanding for more.

Your correct about the Main, they even have thier own website to promote the area. http://boulevardsaintlaurent.com .

Regarding McGill Ghetto, if you were from Montreal you would have heard about it. You can google it, you will see many references,

on yer ignore list
the word ghetto has come to mean a poor run-down section of a city, but originally came from the italian , after Ghetto, an island near Venice where Jews were made to live in the 16th century

and since bagels are a jewish food, the association between a jewish food district and the word ghetto would be an easy one to make, especially for the mcgill eggheads
