Fun fact.....you can shift gears with a standard transmission withount engaging the clutch provided the transmission has all syncromesshed gears....it is a combination of road speed and RPM's and also requires very good timing.

SR
I know but it's really hard to find the timing! I mean REALLY HARD!

You are really the only one that knows if you should get a standard or not and IMO it depends on the type of driver you are and the type of car you're contemplating. IF you are the type of driver that drives places with "purpose", enjoys controlling the car, and actually considers driving fun then a standard may be for you. I also recommend a standard if the car has a 4 cylinder engine (or lower power 6 cylinder) as it's much easier to keep the engine in the optimum power range so that it's actually responsive when you press the gas.

To put this in context, I love driving and have had only 1 automatic in 30+ yrs. My current ride is a standard transmission V8 BMW and I can't get enough of it!

I think Standard is so much more fun to drive! I hate driving automatic now that I've got a standard shift car... although if you commute in the city, standard's a bit of a pain in the ass with all the stop and go...

There's still something to be said about dropping down a gear in a corner because you want to, not because the car makes you...I do it every morning on the Liion's Gate on-ramp...zip around the corner...vroom...vroommm...until I hit the traffic :(

Standard is way more fun until you hit a gridlock when your left foot is on the verge of cramping because you need to engage the clutch so often which of course makes you yearn for an automatic.

There is no way you could possibly handle doing my job then.....jamming gear for 12 hours a day...not to mention the icy prairie winter would really fuck you up LOL

Funny, my wife's from Europe and she never learned to drive an automatic until she moved to Canada, she was in her mid 30's.

As for me, one of my first cars was a 1960 Bel Air and it had what was called a 3 in the tree, which was a standard attached to the steering column. That's a whole different experience than a normal standard with a stick shift.

I dont see how a stick shift car is even 1% enjoyable rush hr vancouver. I dont live there but have seen the downtown to richmond via oak street mess and vice versa. I have experienced that route during peak hours and oh my god, if I saw vancouver rush hour daily I wouldnt touch a stick shift.

Let me sum it up vancouver BC and stick shift cars dont mix.

Standard can test your driving skills. Do you know how to move a car for about a short distance with only the clutch and your car won't stall? Some ppl sucks on that!

I would buy an stick shift car______ as a toy. example- weekend at night, zero traffic me and my 6 speed MT VW GTI zipping nicely past every one.

Other than that scenario, count me in as a lazy fat American who wants everything automatic!

STANDARD BABY STANDARD... OLD SKOOL...

The first truck I drove had 3 on the tree... no I am not that old...it was my Grandpa's old farm truck...I was 10...OK maybe I am old!

I have had motorcycles since I was 13 years old... so maybe I am naturally inclined to a manual clutch, however manual trannys on cars are a different animal altogether.

Of the approx. 10 cars/trucks I have owned...2 have had automatic trannys...never a problem with repairs on either...clutch or transmissions....usually BS like pumps, timing belts, gaskets, etc...the usual suspects...but no tranny/clutch probs with many hi-mileage vehicles.

Good example is my current ride...1993 Toyota 4-Runner...320,000km... runs like a top...starts first click...180kph on highway...super quiet...super solid...can't ask for more...the body will rust off before engine quits!!!

Manual transmission of course!!!

To each his own I guess...I don't live in a city...rush hour might change my mind...but stick-shift for me baby!!!

I am in complete agreement with AL and STORMRIDER...

Some people are just auto tranny people...you either get it or you don't...

There is a certain ZEN between you and your vehicle...be it a car, truck, motorbike...or lawnmower??

You have to be at one with the machine you control for it to work at it's best.

There is no shame if you did not grow up with a clutch and a gearshifter...but you can laern if you want to!!!

I personnaly think it is the only way to go...but that is only my opinion...

All the pretty girls can line up on the left for lessons...I can take 2 at a time :) 3 at a time on tuesdays :):):)

I did the North Shore to Richmond for 7+ years with my standard, didn't bother me a bit. The leg action, the stick action, it all becomes automatic without any thought or bother.... Perhaps it's the only thing that stopped me from falling asleep....

I used to swear by std but now I shift with tiptronic. It is close enough to stick shift and I can drive auto in crawling traffic. Best of all, with auto, I could hold the girl's hand while I am driving.
