Hello Health Nurse

An SP recently told me they clean their silicon toys using a combination of alcohol and soap and water and that therefore they are considered risk free. I suggested using a condom might be a good idea just to be sure. Apparently silicon is non-porous and cleaning it in this way should be considered sufficient.

Can you please comment on this?

Thanks

Hi bucketboy

Here is a link for information on caring for sex toys. It has some additional information for sex workers.

Thanks for posting the link to babeland, dunnochit. They have some good information on caring for sex toys.

Hi bucketboy

Soap and water is great for cleaning of the sex toy, but before using a silicon toy for someone else I would recommend the boiling method as described in our link and the babeland link.

I also think your idea of using a condom is a good idea. Brandi who wrote our article also recommended condoms if the sex toy was used on someone else.

I am not sure about the alcohol because there are so many different strengths, I will ask around and see if I can find some additional information.

I asked one of our infection control nurses about silicon sex toys and using alcohol.

He thought that it was similar to the recommendations they give to hospitals that use vaginal probes for some ultrasound procedures.

He suggested that;

(1) Always use the sex toy with a condom.
(2) After using the sex toy remove the condom and wash well with soap and water.
(3) Let the toy dry and then apply alcohol (at least 70%).

Let me know if you have any more questions, I could see that using alcohol would be easier than the boiling method.
