Hello Health Nurse,

We know that oil-based lubricants should NOT to be used with latex condoms. The oil can damage the latex and render it non-protective.

It just occurred to me that lipsticks and lip balms are oil-based.

Can lipstick or lip balm damage a latex condom during CBJ? If so, would there be any increase in STD/STI risk from the CBJ?

Thanks in advance.

Hi mickmasterson

We recommend not using oil based products with latex condoms as it will weaken the condom and increase the chance of it breaking.

I have seen examples of this when people have blown up condoms and then covered them with oil.

In regard to oil based lip balms and lipstick I have seen people recommend not to use these but I have never seen any testing performed.

This is a big thing when using condoms for vaginal or anal sex as more oil is used for lubrication as compared to the amount of oil probably rubbed off with lip balm.

Another thing with vaginal or anal sex is that there would probably be more pressure put on the condom when compared with receiving oral sex.

There would only be an STI risk if the condom broke. When condoms fail it is usually something you notice.

Given this you would think there could be a risk of breakage but it is probably lower than the risk with more oil and vaginal sex.
