Many factories in Japan have been closed due to this disaster. This can affect the economic recovery tremendously. Watch out if you have stocks!

Not to take anything away from the horrific events in Japan. I just had a few thoughts on ramifications.

This should make life interesting for the US Treasury also. Japan is one of the largest holders/purchasers of US government debt. With everything that has happened there, I would think the Japanese will be quite rightly shifting funds away from US debt and into recovery efforts. That will likely cause US interest rates to rise as the Treasury attempts to make US debt attractive to the shrinking pool of willing purchasers. That in turn will, like the rising oil prices, cause substantial downward pressure on the nascent economic recovery.

Fun times ahead!

I have been hearing reports that the some of the Nuclear power plants in Fukushima have already melted down sending radiation to the West Coast of the U.S. and Canada. I wonder if our government will be warning us of the impending danger?

Don't donate to Canadian Red Cross. They are not helping Japan yet. They are at readiness to help if they are asked. Your money hasnt helped Japan at all yet. Donate to Japanese Red Cross directly if you want your money to have greater impact.

From their own website: http://www.redcross.ca/article.asp?id=38380&tid=001

"The Canadian Red Cross is monitoring the situation closely and has emergency supplies and trained emergency response personnel ready to be deployed."

Almost feel like a scam. The Canadian Red Cross is trying to boost their own funding using the Japan crises.

our government definitely maintained 'radio silence' during the chernobyl disaster, and have done their best to hide any data collected during that era. i've seen maps of the radioactive airborne contaminant paths in europe, and i'll tell you one thing - i don't drink european wines any more!

possibly one of the reasons for hiding the truth is that canadian companies supply a substantial amount of uranium to the reactor market, and maybe the government doesn't want to draw too much attention to the bad side effects of that trade. maybe they're just being politicians and find it easier to lie about bad news - who knows

hopefully this time we will get some more complete answers - just don't hold your breath waiting for the hot breath of enlightenment to scorch the land
