Hospital's Tim Hortons turned into emergency room
CBC News Posted: Mar 1, 2011 10:44 AM ET Last Updated: Mar 1, 2011 2:45 PM ET

Staff at Royal Columbian Hospital near Vancouver were forced to turn the facility's Tim Hortons outlet into an emergency room on Monday night because of a shortage of beds.

There has been a shortage of beds at New Westminster's Royal Columbian Hospital for several years. (CBC) The Fraser Health Authority says beds were set up for five patients between 11:15 p.m. PT and 12:45 a.m. in the coffee shop adjacent to the emergency room of the New Westminster hospital.

Director of public affairs David Plug says the space inside the Tim Horton's is a "designated overflow area" to be used in extreme high-volume situations where the emergency room sees an unexpected surge.

That's what happened on Monday night when around 100 patients checked into the emergency room, said Plug.

"Five patients with stretchers and privacy screens were monitored and assessed [at the Tim Hortons]," he said.

The conditions are not ideal, but they are appropriate and safe, said Plug.

The hospital has suffered from a shortage of bed and an overcrowded emergency room for several years. In May 2008 the hospital announced plans to build a temporary portable emergency room in the parking lot to ease overcrowding.

Plug says the hospital needs an expansion, but other facilities run by the Fraser Health Authority are first in line.

"We've built a new hospital in Abbotsford, We're working to build a new critical care tower at Surrey hospital at our regional hospital there, and Royal Columbian Hospital would then be next," he said.

Doctors concerned

But one emergency doctor at Royal Columbian disagrees. Dr. Sheldon Glazer said corridors and coffee shops are not adequate for patients.

"We can't appropriately examine someone in a hallway. We can't get them undressed. We can't do a thorough examination on a patient in a waiting room," said Glazer.

Treating people in makeshift conditions leads to mistakes and poor care, Glazer said, but it also points to a larger problem.

"There are not enough hospital beds in the system and the emergency room ends up being an overflow ward of the hospital, so that emergency patients, patients who have the acute problems, have to be seen in chairs, in hallways or now in a coffee shop," he said.

B.C. Nurses Union president Debra McPherson blames the health authority and the government for overcrowding.

"I don't know what it's going to take to get this government out of its coma of inaction, and for the Fraser Health Authority in particular to wake up and smell the coffee and finally admit that it has problems," said McPherson.

NDP health critic Adrian Dix has blamed what he calls the ill-conceived decision to shut down nearby St. Mary's Hospital in 2004 and under funding for acute-care beds

Dix should talk. I blame both the NDP and the Liberals for their poor handling of both health care and education.

fuckin' media event! i would like to see the average nightly emergency room figures and just how much of a spike this was. odds are that twenty of those were hired burn-outs to create this media event

new premier, by-election happening soon - ndp and big unions (nuses in this case) will continue to manufacture events like this to make the libs look bad. how many years have gone by now without any unusual emergency room stories since the days of ndp emergency room closures? and all of a sudden last night they had to use the overflow space (which also happens to be leased out by the hospital to tim hortons so they don't have to provide a hospital-run cafeteria for guests)

i'll bet money that the floors in timmy's are a hell of a lot cleaner than the floors in the main hospital - not adequate space my ass!

look for something stupid by the teachers next

Well said. What would Deb McPherson and her NDP buddies suggest. The hospital should turn these folks away. How would they like to be the person who decides who to help and who to turn away.

It was a bad situation and the people at RC did a great job. If there was more money for health care and education we all know that the BCTF and Deb's Nurses Union would make sure they got the lion's share before any improvments were made.

I heard some people say that when NDP was the ruling government, they created a very big deficit. So, when Liberals take over, they can't do anything good to the people. Therefore, it's all NDP's fault!

We complain if taxes go up, and we complain if there isn't sufficient money for education or healthcare. The population is aging and requires more medical treatment. Modern technology costs more and more tests are prescribed. It all adds up to an exponential increase in costs.

What would you not like to pay for in order to have more healthcare?

see? you heard it here first...

i just saw on the morning news that students at Earl Marriott school were allowed (encouraged?) to walk out of classes and protest 'overcrowding' in the schools

ndp and the big public unions are so predictable when it comes to political bullshit and the media plays right along with it

You know, all the nurses I know are too damn busy working their collective asses off to bother staging a publicity event. Have you considered that perhaps you're reading too much into this? Not everything that goes on is a leftist, commie plot.

Since you brought up teaching, how do you stand on the issue of teachers being mandated as "essential service"? If they decide that they are fed up with how things are going, they can be ARRESTED for walking off the job...and last I checked, nobody's life was in danger if some people's dumbass kids aren't in algebra class on any given day.

The rest of the working world has a right to walk out... stand up and take action ... if they feel they are being unjustly treated. Personally, I think we should do away with "teaching" as a government profession...and have all teachers come back as independant educational consultants. If they charged per head, as other "day care" facilities do... they'd be making a fortune.

Maybe people would then pine for the good old days of when teachers were underpaid civil servants, who put up with crap from the populace and were constantly underfoot of the government. Let's be honest... would you put up with everyone's whiny, self serving, self righteous snot nosed brats for the piddly amount of money that teachers are paid? I know I sure as hell wouldn't, and I doubt you would either. That's why I chose a profession that actually pays the bills.

Are you aware that it takes them 10 years to reach the top of their pay scale? I reached the top of mine in less than half that time.

And just for a little more balance in this thread, I've seen just as many cheap, underhanded, unethical and dirty practices in private enterprise as I've seen laziness and complacency in public / union enterprises. I've also seen public/union workers working their asses off in order to counteract this silly, private enterprise led attack on the character of public/union members. It really boils down to misinformation and an intense bias with no interest in actually becoming educated in the matter.

And, since I'm sure someone will take my comments the wrong way...I happen to run a non union company. IMHO, if a company looks after it's workers, treats them fairly & does not discriminate against them... then there is no need for a union. Sadly, it is the fault of employers whom enjoy mistreating employees that has caused the uprise of unionism. Don't hate on people because they want to be treated fairly.
