I am very uninformed or unknowledgeable re- I phones but now want one after seeing what they can do.
I live in mex. for many months a year. So I want a phone that can be used here and there but not pay roaming charges.
I understand that I would need a unlocked one so I can use a mexican server sim card?
what are the pros and cons to doing that?
I dont need or want to watch movies on it , but want all the fun aps so how many Gig or model should i get and how much is a unlocked one? I see used ones on CL for about 400.
any input appreciated

Look on Ebay...just make sure you check which bands it uses and which bands your choice of cell providers use.I am in a similar situation as my contract with rogers is coming due and the fuckers keep trying to get me to take a free phone and thusly rope me into a new 3 year contract...Wind Mobile is a good alternative...for $70 a month you get unlimited calling (even long distance I think) as well as unlimited data...there is no contract and no 911 fee/system access fee....pretty sweet deal IMO.

who did you buy sim card from?
did you have to buy a long term server contract?

Well the worst case scenario is I plug in my SIM card from my current blackberry and then let my contract expire and become a month to month customer with rogers (the best part of this is they will kiss my ass to keep me as a customer)That or I purchase a new SIM card from Wind Mobile as they sell them as do both rogers and telus.

you can buy a legal unlocked iphone in Hong Kong (more expensive though because the carrier is not subsidizing it with a plan)

probably buy it over the internet and courier it to your location

met a guy in Asia who tipped me off on this, he worked for apple and would not take a chance using an illegal unlocked phone

he just bought the prepaid plans where ever he traveled in asian, roaming fees are really expensive for data so buying the pre paid plans and using the local sum cards is the way to go

i,m not going to hong kong anytime soon , would like to but not in the plans...
vancouver /mexico is where i want and need service.
Carlos Slim is the riches man in the world for a good reason and that is he wants his slice of the pie.....
i dont mind paying him a bit but dont want one of the crazy fukking Telus contracts.
So first I need a I-phone unlocked in vancouver and a short month to month server contract in vancouver....that seems to be the problem

Apple to offer unlocked iPhones in Canada
Iain Marlow

Apple Inc. (AAPL-Q259.940.920.35%) will sell the new iPhone 4 unlocked in Canada, allowing consumers to buy the phone online and shop it around to the wireless service provider of their choice.

Though Apple will also sell the phones through its retail stores and the stores of carriers offering service for the device, such as Rogers Communications Inc. (RCI.B-T37.100.190.51%) and Telus Corp. (T-T41.840.340.82%), the Cupertino, Calif.-based technology giant has decided to sell the phone “commitment-free” to customers who may want to roam internationally.

Having an unlocked phone means users can take the handset around the world, popping in SIM cards for other global carriers that use the same wireless technology standard.

Apple shows off iPhone 4
Tech giant hopes new features help differentiate device from its rivals, especially in the business world

So far in this country, if you buy an iPhone from a certain provider you have to stick with that provider. Usually, the carrier chips in a subsidy that lowers the cost of the device in exchange for a long-term contract. Apple’s new offer changes the game.

“This is simply saying that the carrier subsidy model appeals to some people but not to all people,” said Iain Grant of the telecom consultancy SeaBoard Group. “I think Apple has learned that it makes more sales having a diversity of carriers than it does being locked into one.”

In the U.S., AT&T has an exclusive deal with Apple. Anyone south of the border who wants an iPhone has to use it on AT&T, a company that's had its share of network problems and recently eliminated its unlimited data plans.

But a glimpse on Apple’s Canadian website shows the company is selling its current 8GB 3Gs model ($549) and will sell its new iPhone 4 unlocked.

“When you purchase your iPhone from the Apple Online Store, you’ll get it commitment-free,” the site reads. “So you can sign up for service with the carrier of your choice and change your carrier at any time.”

dhgate.com sells fake or counterfeit stuff hence the cheaper prices .... be warned
Well from my observations DHgate sells perfect copies of things such as Blackberries/I phones/Calloway golf clubs and more....do you actually think that Blackberries & I phones are made/assembled in Canada/USA...not likely due to the high labour costs.....I have looked at golf clubs at DHgate and they are the real deal...why?...because the components are all made in China and then are put togeather/assembled in Canada/USA....tis pretty strong arguement when the clubs have serial numbers just like the ones you buy at Golftown/Nevada Bobs.

I will find out soon enough...I got an email confirming the shipping of my blackberry this morning.....if it turns out to be a POS I will post it...if it turns out to be a perfect yet unbranded copy that works fine I will post that....just have to wait till I get it to find out.

Getting a phone unlocked is easy enough....my point was buying a phone for $120 that is allready unlocked VS paying $600 for a locked phone with no contract that is locked....or getting that phone for $100 and it is locked and you are locked into a 3 year contract....buying a phone that is unlocked and comes with no contract is the way to o if it is a "world phone" such as the blackberry bold 9700/i-phone 3G...as all you have to do is buy a SIM card and you are good to go.

On a side note...I got yet another call today from Rogers offering me a phone upgrade today.....I told them that I was not interested and hung up....cripes those assholes just dont get the message LOL
