Havent really noticed much of a change cause it's the first day. Baught a bag of chips for 93cents and had to pay something like 12 cents tax. Any chance of them getting rid of the new hst in the near future? I heard something about them having extra signatures.

On the news they had the ex premier Bill Vander something with 700,000 signatures with people not wanting the hst. Wouldnt that have any effect on getting rid of the hst?

Come on LAG I've never lived in BC and even I know it's Bill Vander Zalm (spelling?) And to answer your question no. It's all about elections, and even if the new government (assuming it changes) promises to remove the HST they won't. Just look at he Liberals and the GST.

no. van der zalm's campaign is to get mla's recalled (albeit on the basis of the hst) but if he ever gets enough of the mla's recalled then he has to manufacture a vote on the hst and get it passed by the legislative assembly.

the status of the recall is that van der zalm now gets access to the voters list in the 14 ridings where he signed up more than 10% of the voters. with those voters lists (which are hopelessly out of date now) he has to go out and sign up 45% of the electorate in each riding in less than 60 days. as you may or may not know, 45% is an almost impossible task in bc. in an election, less than half of the electorate will actually be convinced to vote, and of that half, usually less than 50% usually wins an election (that equals say 50% times say 43% equals something like 21.5% of elegible voters actually wins the election). To sign up 45% of the elegible voters on a petition is almost impossible. it has happened only once in 11 tries in bc

IF he actually gets enough recalls to force the assembly to dissolve and he then gets an election on this shit, many of the voters that were happy to sign the petition in protest of the cursed tax will be unwilling to see any change in the status quo for fear of the socialist hordes getting in (or worse yet whatever unholy party of malcontents and losers van der zalm puts together). in addition, the incoming party will take one look at the financial fiasco the 2010 left behind, and the secret promises that were made to the feds many, many years ago behind closed doors when the feds first agreed to helping finance the 2010, and they will immediately scuttle any plans they might have of holding a vote in the legislative assembly on the matter.

so in a nutshell, the likelihood of the hst being recalled in our lifetime is about three-quarters of nine-tenths of fuck all

I was reading about this and holy shit...for new home sales it adds 10's of thousands of dollars. A typical home in Vancouver or Toronto will have so much tax added that a person could buy themselves a new BMW. How the hell is that economic stimulation? All I wil say is "GO ALBERTA".
I think HST hits homes over 500k?

Is this right?

HST on homes over $525 000. (Which will be your average 600 square foot condo, isn't it?)

The HST will go through, it will never be rescinded.
VanderZalm is a shyster. He claims to be looking out for the common man, but some of us remember how much he cared when he was in power.
He is a real estate developer. I don't imagine he is building homes under $525 000. Because he cares for the common man.
It may cool off the real estate market in the lower mainland, but I don't think so there either. Too much demand.

The Liberals won't be thrown out of power.
Premier Carole James? I don't think so.
Liberals may need a new leader for the next election. One a little less smug.

What's really interesting is that the NDP haven't had much to say on the matter.

Meaning:

If the NDP were to gain power in the next provincial election - they have no plans on supporting the electorate on this issue.

The hst is here to stay, no matter who you vote for next election.

So much for politicians looking out for us.

The entire HST debate is moot anyway. The additional transfer payments from the Federal Government ensure an additional source of revenue over the next few years. Though the HST was billed as a revenue neutral tax, it will increase the amount the Provincial Government brings in. It comes down to this: The province is in debt and running a deficit. More revenues and/or cuts to services are required. If the HST was to be repealed, we would be paying more in taxes somewhere else instead.

One could argue for or against the HST, based on whether they favour flat taxes or progressive ones, but the additional revenue has to come from somewhere.

Thank you! Economically speaking HST is one of the best taxation methods. For example it would be very beneficial to BC's economy if HST was hiked to 15% and the provincial income taxes were cut across the board.

As the saying goes.....BC= Bring Cash...and lots of it.....I have lived there in many different cities/towns and the common factor is 1 thing.....everyone wants to extract their pound of flesh out of you regardless if you live in Vancouver.....or Williams Lake...or Nakusp...or Revelstoke...or Chilliwack....it matters not....I lived in BC for many years in a lot of places....and the focus by the large is to fuck over the consumer at all costs......to extract that pound of flesh so to speak.

As for getting rid of the HST....good fuckin luck....it wont happen.

If BC's Petroleum industry was half the size of Alberta's, we'd have a lot less taxes too. Alaska, with it's small population and large oil industry has no sales tax and no state income tax.

There's a distrust here of offshore drilling that is unlikely to be overcome any time soon but the gas industry is motoring along alright.

Cheers dood! WS.

Nope won't happen. It will never be removed once instituted. The revenue that it will generate is just too good for the province. But wait and see when election time comes around they may decrease by a percent to try and win you votes!
