I vote to move the stupid name Canucks to Ontario. The BW,& esp the Knuckleheads, don't deserve to watch hockey here bc they're unknowledgeable, uneducated & completely moronic to think we are Cup contenders. We are forever cursed. Thus they always suck. Name anytime where we should feel proud of this pathetic team.

Being from Winnipeg I of course voted for Winnipeg.
My only wish would be for another name than the Jets.
I say if the team returns we need to start a new era with a new name.
The name Jets has absolutely nothing to do with Winnipeg or Manitoba. The name came from the New York Jets. The team's original owner, Ben Hatskins, was friends with the owner of the New york Jets and took the name for his new hockey team in '72.
Sure in the old WHA days they had some great teams with Hull, Hedberg, Nilson, etc. and could have beat anyone including the Canadiens of the 70's but in the NHL, for the most part they were a bad team. Sure they had that one year they finished 4th overall and beat Calgary a couple of times in the playoffs but overall they were a disappointment.

Bring back the team but with a new name.

I think what is "unknowledgeable, uneducated and completely moronic" is to continually state the exact same thing in a different way in various threads and try and pass it off like you know something.

The schtick(sp) is getting boring BJH...you're quickly becoming irrelevant...a read not worth reading.

In response to the OP I don't think Winnipeg can support a team long term. Not sure about Quebec City and if you move another team to southern Ontario (I think this would be the market that offers the best support) you may as well sell the Sabres to another market at the same time.

Really? Care to explain that statement? Not saying you're wrong, I just didn't know the WHA Jets well enough to see how they would have better than one of the best teams in NHL history.

"The WHA Years (1972–1979)

The NHL had recently expanded to 16 teams, adding franchises in many hockey-hungry cities (only one in Canada), but also in Atlanta, Oakland and Los Angeles. The WHA brought major professional hockey to Ottawa, Quebec City, Winnipeg, Edmonton, and later Calgary. On December 27, 1971, Winnipeg was granted one of the founding franchises in the WHA, to Ben Hatskin, a local figure who made his wealth in cardboard shipping containers.[2] The team took their name from the Winnipeg Jets of the Western Canada Hockey League .[3]
The Jets' first signing was Norm Beaudin ("the Original Jet") and the teams first major signing was Bobby Hull. Hull's acquisition, partially financed by the rest of the WHA's teams, was widely seen as giving legitimacy to the WHA as a serious rival major league to the NHL.[citation needed]
The Jets were further noteworthy in hockey history for being the first North American club seriously to explore Europe as a source of hockey talent. Winnipeg's fortunes were bolstered by acquisitions such as Swedish forwards Anders Hedberg and Ulf Nilsson, who starred with Hull on the WHA's most famous and successful forward line (nicknamed "the Hot Line"), and defenceman Lars-Erik Sjoberg, who would serve as the team's captain and win accolades as the WHA's best defenceman. Behind these players and other European stars such as Willy Lindstrom, Kent Nilsson, Veli-Pekka Ketola, leavened by players such as Peter Sullivan, Norm Beaudin and goaltender Joe Daley, the Jets were the most successful team in the short-lived WHA. The team won the Avco World Trophy three times, including in the league's final season against Wayne Gretzky and the Edmonton Oilers. The Jets made the finals five of the WHA's seven seasons and were widely considered one of the best teams in hockey during the WHA era.[citation needed]
Another notable accomplishment was the Jets' 5–3 victory over the Soviet National team on January 5, 1978, making the Jets the first club team ever to defeat the Soviet elite squad.[4]
In the last season in the WHA, Kent Nilsson had 107 points, while Morris Lukowich had 65 goals, and Peter Sullivan had 46 goals and 86 points. The Jets made it to the Avco Cup and Gary Smith gave up the last goal in WHA history to Dave Semenko in a 7–3 Jets win.[5]"

Maybe I did misspeak if i implied they would beat the Candiens every time. What i meant was they would have matched up well and won their share. Its well known that Glen Sather used the WHA Jets as his model for the Oilers teams of the early to mid 80's

Actually, the name was taken from the team that played in what is now the Western Hockey League during the late 60's and early 70's.

Good point (Somebody knows their hockey history.) You are right in that the name of Winnipeg's WCJHL (Junior A) team which Hatskin also owned, was the Jets. When Hatskin founded the WHA team he gave them the name Jets and the Junior A team became known as the Junior Jets. Whether we are talking about the WHA Jets or the WHL Jets before them, the name was still "borrowed" from the New York Jets. After Hatskin sold the Junior Jets to the Gerry Brisson group they became the CLUBS after Club Beer.

"During the summer of 1967, the Manitoba Amateur Hockey Association agreed to allowed three teams to enter the Western Canada Junior Hockey League, the Brandon Wheat Kings and the Flin Flon Bombers from the Manitoba Junior Hockey League, and a new team, the Ben Hatskin's owned Winnipeg Jets.
After one season of operating both the World Hockey Association Jets and the Junior Jets, Hatskin put the Junior Jets up for sale."

I always thought it had to do with Hull being on the team ('golden jet').

Me, I'm happy with a new team anywhere in Canada. S. Ontario, Winnipeg, Quebec... hell, stick it in Regina and it'll be more appreciated than in Phoenix.

As long as Basketball Bettman still runs the NHL, the chances of another Canadian team is next to nil.

Just to piss off Balsillie, the Big Boys Club of the NHL could award a Canadian franchise to another investor group. Winnipeg looks feasible and a new NHL team will be the city's major entertainment extravaganza. Like when the Columbus Blue Jackets joined the NHL, Jets will be sold out every game. :)
