I wasn't gonna write about this but someting caught my eye from another thread. Someone was laughing at a phrase on a shirt that they thought was funny but in reality it was teaching our kids the wrong thing and promoting the wrong attitude we Canadians shouldn't carry.

here is the cut and past of the respond I gave to the other thread.

WELCOME TO CANADA
NOW SPEAK ENGLISH
IN PUBLIC

right fucking on!!!!
How can you love something like that???

Even though I would like to see the landed imigrants to start speaking english, its not really our problem. The only time it would be a problem is when they are serving you in a established business. Comments like that
doesn't help our canadian image.

Last week my uncle which was visiting from Hong Kong was in Macdonalds trying to get a small coke for my little cousin and some punk kid kept screaming at my uncle asking if he wants a "small cock". Because he is very limited in his english he was quite intimidated by these four teens. I was in the washroom at the time but when I got out they kept telling my uncle if he can't speak english in Canada, he better swim back to China. I got seriously pissed off quick as they were starting to threaten me and the Macdonald's manager ask everybody to leave as he does not want to see this stuff in his restaurant. I ran to my car and I picked up my basball bat and my Club(anti-theft device) and gave it to my uncle. The minute the punks came out, I had my bat right against their head and made him apologize to my uncle. I took his wallet and wrote down his address from his Driver's license and dumped coke all over his wallet and threw it the garbage can. I gave him a few slaps accross the face and my uncle made me stop. I swear if my uncle wasn't there, I think I would of really hurt him.

My point is, phrases like that teaches the young guyz the wrong thing and racism allwayz get involved somehow even though the person doesn't realizes it.

I honestly sympathize, but beating the crap out of a few misguided kids will only result in making confirmed racists out of kids that were probably just socially challenged idiots to start with. I'm not saying they're right for acting like idiots, but the old two wrongs...yadda yadda.

Beating the crap out of them sounds painfully similar to the typically American way to handle racism.

I hear what you're saying and think these little bastards and all other little bastards like them are 100% out of line and agree that it can be VERY hard to walk away from that sort of ignorance without incident.

BUT, kids are assholes by nature. The tendency for kids to be idiots takes all forms. Picking a guy apart for his accent and acting menacing is just a couple of them.

Ten years from now, they may have sheepishly remembered being complete jerks about your uncles accent, but it's far more likely that since given what in a kids mind is justification to hate a whole race, there probably won't be anything sheepish about that particular memory. They'll be too busy spewing racist propaganda and citing that very incident as "proof" of whatever racial conspiracy they come up with.

That being said, I honestly can't say with certainty that I would have reacted differently than you. Wish I could though.

I don't know.

What i would do & what i should do are often not the same.

I usually carry a pepper spray & quite often a knife & security alarm,
in addition to a cell phone.

If the situation seemed threatening enough, i might refuse to leave
McDonalds &/or try to call the police.

So I take it you're saying they should have walked and said nothing?
I don't know man, somehow I think in that approach it would only have
instilled socially challenge idiots to become even more confirmed racists
while laughing at your back as you leave.

Hopefully these little thugs were embarrased enough to give their moronic actions a major rethink..........me thinks.

Can't agree with you there. If only it were as simple as thugging your way into peace and harmony.

Kids will forget what assholes they were when they were young - when they eventually remember, it's then that they're embarassed. They won't forget having the crap kicked out of them in what would be viewed as a racist incident. It's not something that would embarass them into behaving better. It's the sort of thing that festers.

I kind of agree with travel guy on this one. I think that you're right with your point that simply walking away isn't going to do anything. In fact, it would probably make them more likely to repeat those actions as doing nothing would teach them that there won't be any consequences for their actions.

But at the same time, simply beating their deserving asses, although very satisfying in the short term (Lord knows it would make me feel a whole lot better), would probably make things worse down the road as it would end up fostering even more antagonism within them against asians.

I think that the reprimand, for it to have the most effect, most likely has to come from the kids peers i.e. other caucasians. That way, the admonishment would carry the most weight and they would be more likely to understand that that type of behaviour isn't tolerated in our society. Too bad there wasn't a white guy around to shit kick the little F$%&ers.

But what the hell; good on you, Verb.

I think it taught the punks a lesson, especially by becoming the victims themselves. Isn't that why they send problem kids to tour prisons, to scare the crap out of them and show them they are not invincible and there are worse/tougher people out there? They thought they were picking on an old man remember, and that deserves a beating, I don't think it matters by whom. They may harbour secret resentments, but I doubt that racial discrimination OR picking on older people will be so much fun in the future... :D

PS Did they cry or look scared when you took the wallet? Inquiring minds want to know!

in the moment
the era of anything goes in 2000

I blame TV & video games to some extent.....look at the message & tone of most shows, adults daft & clueless & kids superior & sneaky. The sex & violence allowed on prime time tv & videos is outrageous. No wonder they don't respect their elders. Might as well blame the parents for spoiling their asses & working too much  LOL They are a product of society & society is becoming less community orientated & more self centred & as a result less respectful to each other. ( I won't bore you with the 'pack animal' theory- we often overlook instinct)

Really sad to read Verb, IMO we are all ancestors of immigrants & that is the wonderful thing about Canada, the blending of cultures. The only ppl with any solid roots in Canada is the first nations.

Wow

Maybe I have lead a sheltered life.

1) I have never ever witnesses something like this.
2) I have never seen a situation escalate to "followed out to car and threatened", with out some "talk back" or "retaliation from the other side".

I respect you for standing up for yourself.

I am completely mocking western society and movies, stereotypes and the like etc. when I say this. I am trying to be funny and I hope I don't offend you.

Had this been a movie, you wouldn't have needed a bat. Your Uncle would have just patiently taken them out in a ballet of leg sweeps, side kicks and sternum punches.

Grabbing the BAT was very Canadian. Nothing like threatening someone with a beating from a quality blunt object.

As for bully type idiots. It expect you got the vibe that standing up to them would break them down. 4 on 2 isn't always a good idea, but it is my bet the 3 others gave their "friend" shit for getting them in a situation like this. People tend to like situations where there is no recourse for their actions. This was likely a great reality check.

They probably talk about that situation with that "Asian guy" in a derogotory manner, but my bet is they tread more lightly in the future.

Its tough to blanketly condone the "threat of violence" but sounds like the reation was justified.
