In the process of setting up a Wi-Fi network in my house, however I heard that if you ahve a 2.4 ghz cordless phone, you will cut your internet connection while you are talking. Anyone confirm or deniy this? If it is true how can you eliminate it?

Hi Brocketrocket,

Some 2.4 gHz phones will cause interference with your wireless router. I use a v-tech cordless phone and have had no problems.
Some people I know use a Panasonic and had to toss it because it kept interfering with their signal.

The problem with the 2.4GHz range is that it is unregulated. So devices operation in this range can spread themselves out and use as much or as little of the range as they like. Depending on your phone it could strongly interfere with your 802.11b/g network. Then again it might only slightly. Microwave ovens will also cause interference.

802.11b has 11 channels. Hopefully you can find one channel that the phone doesn't mess with.

A possibility is going into the 5GHz band with 802.11a, but it's far less popular and none of the devices claiming to be WiFi will work with it (the WiFi stamp is mainly for the 2.4GHz range).

Don't forget wireless is far less secure then wired connections. Since you are sending information through the air anyone can snarf it, and they don't need to be within sight of your home. WEP provides little protection as it is crackable. So if you want to surf PERB from your couch make sure you don't mind everyone on the block knowing. Also people will try to use your WiFi to get free access. Put some protection in place to prevent that.

CC is right and it's not just whether you're PERBing. If you make purchases online you may find your credit card number swiped. Same with paypal account info and online banking. If you work from home and a hacker gets your network password or VPN password there could be serious consequences. Be very careful. HM

Amen Brother HM!

Email passwords and email traffic, Web page passwords and webpage content, passwords for FTP, and tones of other stuff can all be snarfed. If it's not encrypted others can see it. If you have a wireless printer, someone else can probably print to it.

The best thing to do is set up a VPN for your wireless computers. Have them VPN to a local wired VPN server that can then send the packets over the mildly safer wired world. This won't protect your wireless printer or other wireless appliances, but the VPN (if set up right) should protect most of what you do.

Understand the technology before using it, and be careful out there.
