Here are the few wrong facts that tv and news always tries to convince us:

1. Prostitution is illegal in Canada
Fact: Prostitution is legal, only soliciting, operating brothels, and street prostitution are not.

2. The Age of Consent for Sex and the minimum age of working as prostitute is both 19 (sometimes 21)
Fact: The Age of consent is 16 (just changed from 14), the minimum age of working as prositute is 18. The only time 19 is the minimum age to work as prositute is when alcohol is involved in the session.

Still lost in the '60s
Because mainstream media are mainstream. They are part of the world of corporate profits. They are either funded by corporations who buy advertising or, in the case of public broadcasters, funded by the government. Sex trade workers have no economic clout.

I wonder if Senator Larry Campbell could be convinced to start supporting the legalization of prostitution so the governments could "tax the hell out of it."

Well I don't know about the answer to the second question, but I can answer the first. I think the main reason people say prostitution is illegal here (even though it isn't), is because those that are opposed to it, don't want Canada to have the same reputation as say Amsterdam, Thailand, Brazil, or Tijuana. They don't want Canada to be associated with and well known for prostitution. They don't want people coming here just to get companionship. They want Canada to have a "clean" image. Even in Amsterdam, rumor has it that their tryin to subdue the red light districts in an attempt to "clean up" Amsterdam's reputation. I think another reason is because some people just don't know. Most people who are ignorant to the industry only think of street prostitution. They don't think of brothels, escorts, etc. So they assume since street solicitation is illegal, then it must all be illegal. Also some people assume that since it's illegal in the states, that it must be illegal up here too.
Well, i think completely legal prostitution doesn't entail bad reputation. Prostitution is completely legal in Australia, singapore, and new zealand, yet they don't have the same bad reputation as thailand or brazil
