My department manager called me in his office today and told me the company may be getting a six month project oversees. This area he mentioned was dangerous but the client would provide body guards.

We also talked about possibly looking into bullet proof vests like the reporters on TV wear. Anybody have an ideal where in Vancouver I can find a few of differint sizes including womens sizes? And yes, she has huge breasts. I may also need one for someone weighing about 350 pounds with a 54 inch waist. Also, will it be a problem bringing them on an airplane?

Here are 2 links:
http://www.pacsafety.com/products/BVP link.htm
http://www.surveillance-equip.com/body-armor.html

The kind you want has pockets over the chest and spine for armor plates to be inserted.

No matter what cloth is used, a vest will only stop a pistol bullet. A rifle bullet will still penetrate as will the shrapnel from an IED. The armor plates keep you alive without making the vest so heavy that it can't be worn.

When riding in a vehicle the passengers should have a ballistic blanket draped over the seat and onto the floorboards. A second ballistic blanket draped over their legs will reduce potential injury.

Don't try to carry personal armor or weapons onto a plane. Ship it to the Security Company that is picking you up at the airport and don it before leaving the airport.

Hey Man I am in an Industry that uses Body Armour Systems quite a bit and this company is expensive but the very best. When we send guys overseas these are what we send them with. Really this isn't the sort of thing you want to get cheap about. The Dragon Skin level V(5) stops Handgun, Rifle rounds up to "7.62 x 54R mm 187 GR, steel case, armor piercing incendiary" which covers almost every round that they can throw at you as well as fragmentation protection from Explosives and IED's...... http://www.pinnaclearmor.com/body-armor/dragon-skin.php

Good luck and if you have an specific questions please PM me

Body Armour

DragonSkin has mixed reviews, also it is quite expensive and heavy. Pinnacle is good stuff as is anything from Paraclete. Pacific Safety in Kelowna may be ok, but they don't sell to John Q public and make damn sure it doesn't have Zylon in it. Myself I would try One Shot Tactical, Dave's Surplus (here in New West) or www.BulletProofMe.com. Depending on which airport you are going through, you may or may not have problems. Some guys go through Dubai and get all sorts of hassles and some don't get hastled at all. A lot of it depends on how you act/dress. Usually a place like Dubai will 'sieze' it and store it at the airport until you fly out. They just don't want it 'in' the country. Saves you from having to lug it around town.
You want to make sure the soft armour is Level IIIA and the plates are Level IV, this will give max protection. Also a good helmet which should also be Level IIIA like the ACH MICH. Good luck.

Rather than go through the hassle of carrying stuff with you, why not tell your client to acquire the gear and have it ready for you when you get there? You could specify exactly what you want. Try on examples before you leave so you can tell the client what sizes are needed. Tell the client that if the gear isn't exactly what you specify, you'll just come home again.

Just a thought. There may be reasons that I haven't thought of, for wanting to carry the gear with you.

I'm in a rush to submit a budget. As a rough estimate, how much should I budget for a good quality vest with all the required accessories, maintenance kits carrying case and so on? Would an extra large size cost more?

I was also doing a little research about the country and it is deffinitely is a very dangerous place. People can even buy AK47 and M16 for as little as $50 US in the markets. With all that firepower, no wonder all the elephants are becoming extinct. Glad I'm not going.

That is just wrong to bring someone that big on an airplane. I would ship them surface mail. Remember to put air holes in the crate! If you have to ship porky by air, they sure as hell better not sit beside me. I recommend that they buy 2 seats so they don't crush some poor civilian.

On a serious note, are you desperate for money or why the hell are you going to which ever hell-hole the boss is sending you to?

Beirut 1985

Fudd, I was in Beirut in 1985 and we were getting shot at BECAUSE we were wearing bulletproof vests. The thought being once we were dead they could cop our armour. We wore them exactly one day and then wore our CBC Tshirts that said PRESS DONT SHOOT in English, French and Arabic.

But they are available online if you want to waste the bosses cash...

I don't know where your located, but you can order online, or stop right into the store. I have been there a few times and they always have a full stock.

Thanks for the info guys now I can submit some real numbers. I think I'll use the cost of the most expensive one I've seen, about $1200 plus maybe another $300 for taxes, shipping and so on. Then the helmet is a good ideal so add on another $500. So I'll budget $2000 per person for the vest and helmet. And I think I'll add $1000 for the vest for the girl with the big knockers and for the oversized guy with the 52 waist.

The trick in any country is to blend in,I'd rather walk around in local dress then wearing a mostly useless vest and helmet. Like the pro 's say. A vest don't work on head shots. And a vest that will stop a direct hit from a 7.62 is a myth.

Well it wasn't one of my best pieces of work but the estimates been submitted.

It's going to be real hard to blend in with the locals unless we send everbody to a tanning salon for a 12 hours session. Even the body guards are Begian.

Personally I think everybody is just being paronoid. Our company is there for this project to help the local people and devope the country's industry so they can be self sufficient and prosperious. We are not there to do any harm or occupy the country so they have no reason to want to do any harm to us.

Yup Jenn, that's about the situation in the region. I was doing some research and I found this article about some of the problems in the area.

"gone from protecting their herds with spears to outfitting their young men with cheap, reliable and deadly automatic rifles"

Need advice. I am trying to make a helmet fit over a set of head phones and it just doesn't feel right. When I'm wearing the head phones the helmet seems to ride too high. Should I get ask for a helmet that is one size larger or is there a trick to it? And yes I should read the instructions, but they are in French which I don't know.
