What precautions would you take for home security?

We have had a rash of breakins during the daytime in our hood. Numerous places hit and laptops, iPads, smartphones, liquor have been the targets. I have had stuff stolen from outside my place and a few tests on my home security.

I have a monitored system but during the day my door is usually unlocked. Recently I was in my office and heard someone enter and I yelled "who's there?". They ran away pretty quickly.

Would you place a big monitored camera at both front and back doors or install several smaller IP based cameras in various locations inside the house? My gut tells me the big round outdoor cameras say something about the contents of the house or you may be gang or drug related.

I am leaning toward the smaller IP cameras that you can view on a smartphone or tablet from anywhere with an App versus the industrial cameras. I figure the police response is 45 minutes so a big system is either the right or wrong approach. Confused??

I don't want to get oversold by the security company but want to make a smart choice.

What would you do?

Small cameras inside?? Who gives a fuck, once they are in, they are taking your stuff. Concentrate on keeping them OUT!

I think the point people are missing is the long response times to a home breakin. This is primarily due to 75% of alarms are false and Police treat them as a third priority call.

You can have your alarm going off and they still have time to gather up some stuff and run before the Police arrive on scene. Filming them in the act or having a couple of outdoor cameras before they attempt to break in is the question.

Can you ever be too safe or too careful? Get expert advice and do whatever it takes to give you peace of mind. The more evidence, the better if you ever do have a break in.

I loved the Panic Room Jodie Foster had in the movie.

;)

You are so right Ms Sarah. Having a Security System, stickers on every window and a big sign out front is not a deterrent anymore. Sure having a 150 lb Guard Dog would change someone's mind about entering my place uninvited but the way our legal system is convoluted, I would probably be charged for hurting the burglar with the dog.

I think I will start working the phones to see what experts have to say about video surveillance for my system.

I once saw a sign on a door that said "beware! attack cat inside".

Or you could live in a place that has security guards at the only entrance, who take peoples ID when they go to your room & return them when the SP leaves, has an in-room safe to keep your valuables & a front desk security box for the same, & maybe you have several suitcases with locks or other hiding places to secretly stash stuff.

laptops, iPads, smartphones, liquor have been the targets.
"10 Practical Ways to Protect Your Laptop Against Theft, Loss or Misplacement.

1. Keep Your Eyes On Your Laptop

Be aware of your laptop at all times especially when traveling. You wouldn't leave a Thousand Dollar Bill lying around unattended would you? So watch your laptop closely.

2. Don't Use An Obvious Laptop Bag

Carry your laptop in regular luggage that doesn't look like it has a laptop. Don't advertise your laptop to any would-be thieves.

3. Use Visual Locks And Restraints

7....Keeping track of your laptop's serial number is also a good idea and have this number stored in a different place other than on your laptop.

10. Backup Backup Backup... hardware can be easily replaced, your personal data and months/years of work may take forever to recover or redo."
