Wait...what? Is Trump really a serious contender for the White House?

Not surprised, there's more stupid people in American than smart. After all, Bush was elected twice and he was never the sharpest knife in the drawer....

i like this comment after the zerohedge article...

trump is representing an agenda that is yet to be revealed
remember how all the lefties were lifting champagne glasses over the election of obama? it'll be the same for the righties if trump gets in

but will he be like obama, and do nothing like what he is saying right now?

The very scary part is maybe Trump is stupid enough to actually push for the s**t that gushes from his empty brain.

What a disaster for America if he was elected. And for the rest of the world.

I think he is... or at least, he has a big enough ego for it! A recent article by NY Times highlights how he buried the USFL, blamed everyone else for it, and is now regarded as a "successful businessman" where in reality many of his business dealings were failures or less successful than ideal due to his egotistical bumbling.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/20/s...less-than-artful-failure-in-pro-football.html

Nowadays, he's more of a marketer of his own name than anything....and unfortunately for the US, doing quite well at it! Cruz is no better (potentially even scarier, in some respects) so the only reasonable hope for a moderate Republican is Rubio (Rubios fish taco's, MMMmmmmm..... sorry, back on topic:), a fairly young guy who could get out-dueled by Trump & Cruz in public debates. Sadly, a major deciding factor in the Presidential election is how people do in one-on-one debates, not how they're judged for leadership, building consensus, team building, foreign policy, domestic policy, economic policy, inspiring national strategy, building ties with allies.... You know, the shit that Presidents should be doing (I think) about 99% of the time. And Cruz is considered a fearsome debater while Trump seems adept at pulling at emotional strings for those desperate for change.

My personal hope/theory - Trump entered the race to further drum up his business and will pull out after destroying the hopes for any reasonable candidate, leaving the Republican party in shambles and allowing the Democratic nominee (Clinton or Sanders, I'm sorta rooting for Sanders but I think Clinton would do OK if the Republican party (Congress) wasn't so adamantly and illogically anti-Clinton, even more than they were anti-Obama) to walk away with the Presidency.

The other hope - the Electoral college (please don't ask me to explain it...) was originally put into place so a supposedly intelligent group of folks would ensure "Mickey Mouse" or some other jokester/write-in wasn't voted into the most powerful position in the country by the uneducated masses. As far as I know, they've always voted per the popular vote in their respective districts, but maybe they would actually do their job this time & prevent a global disaster if Trump were to be elected.

Trump & Cruz - just one of many reasons I moved to Canada :-D (I'll help build the wall to protect Canada, btw!)

Trump is launching a big tax on the middle class and poor. He doesn't call it that of course.
He wants a 45% tariff on all Chinese made goods. That is pretty much everything that people buy in the USA. So all those items: iPhones, TVs, running shoes, your DeWalt tools, all go up in price by 45%. That is going to hurt a lot of people, and the 45% goes right into government coffers.
Then he wants to cancel all free trade agreements, so American consumers have to pay the prices demanded by protected manufacturers. Like the overpriced garbage that Detroit made until the Japaneses invasion.
He is turning the USA into another North Korean Hermit Kingdom.

Do any of you oldtimer members remember the American who posted on here about ten years ago? Not LuckyDog, the other one. He argued that the US economy was so strong and self sufficient that they needed no outsider trading with them. Well, we will soon find out.

I had a discussion regarding this with an American colleague. He insisted that Americans should only buy American products, and imports should be excessively taxed so as to make them non competitive.

I asked him if using this same argument, all foreign nations could ban American products, or at least, tax them to a point where no one else in the world could afford to buy American products.

He looked at me stunned, because this argument never occurred to him. Had to remind him fair trade works both ways.

Trump is obviously a very serious contender for the Republication nomination, as he will likely have the votes at the convention. At that point he becomes the Republican's worst nightmare as he will not get to the White House.

I do not think even the Republican party will want to stall a Supreme Court nomination for almost 9 years. With an evenly divided Court, all decisions automatically revert to the lower courts' decision. That would mean many cases favoring the Right's causes will not fall in their favor. Even Republicans are not all stupid.

Hillary will mop the floor with Trump if the debates are properly moderated.

If the debates are the typical free for all; the Americans will get what they deserve being a nightmare President that will cause world wide problems.

Donald Trump is like a sort of average between Silvio Berlusconi and Rob Ford.

Ted Cruz... probably worse. Something sleazy and creepy about that guy. If you shake that guy's hand, you'll probably get some "Dead Zone" style premonition.

Marc Rubio is basically a dead candidate walking...obviously clear that he can't think on his feet, as the video shows. Almost like a programmer forgot to put in the right response text so the default was used. He should be dropping out any time soon.

Trump is picking up delegates left/right/center and the Party's establishment candidate, Bush, just dropped out. Cruz/Rubio are weak candidates.

That's exactly what I was talking about! And a big reason I don't like debates - how many people will now ignore Rubio based on that flub? Personally, I don't think that well on my feet so if some belligerent jerk threw me for a loop on live TV, I would be humming & hawing too. Or telling him that my dad could beat up his dad. But give me some quiet time, a nice window view to gaze out on, and a few espresso's, and I can solve the world's problems!!! :-D

Trump's and Cruz's ideas are so ridiculous, it leaves me dumb-founded that they are listened to. But as an earlier poster stated, its not the wisest but the loudest that get the attention (and votes). And for some voters, its the most religious: I have a aunt, who I love to death, but she said she voted for George W. Bush because she felt "that he IS a good Christian". I almost cried when she told me that...

The political system is the problem, not Donald Trump. The fact he is a credible candidate is a SYMPTOM of the problem.
Agreed fully. Trump may be a muppet, but he's just a product of a system / political culture which prevented any non-muppets from even running.

Trump is indeed a symptom of a broken system.
People are fed up with career politicians feathering their own nest at the voter's expense.
Best thing Americans could do is get rid of every single incumbent. Every last one. Get those lazy dogfuckers off the public trough.
A vote for Trump is a vote against the status quo of greasy liars like Shillary and their attitude of entitlement.
