It's very simple mathematics.

Any 2 digit number xy can be represented as (10x + y)

When we subtract the sum of the digits (x + y), we get:

(10x + y) - (x + y) = 9x

Therefore the answer is always a multiple of 9.

All the 2 digit numbers starting with 9 (99 down through 90) produce a result of 81

All the 2 digit numbers starting with 8 (89 down through 80) produce a result of 72

All the 2 digit numbers starting with 7 (79 down through 70) produce a result of 63

And so on...

All the 2 digit numbers starting with 1 (19 down through 10) produce a result of 9

The symbols for 81, 72, 63, 54, 45, 36, 27, 18 and 9 are identical (*). Simple, eh?

I am still amazed

Ok..so there is a mathematical formula...but...

Each time try this...the corresponding symbol appears for the number I am thinking of...I don't move the arrow on my screen...and the fact that a different symbol appears each time I do this...make me think...hmmmm

Still amazing I think...

I don't understand what you're trying to say.

No matter what two digit number you choose, the result from subtracting the sum of its digits from itself will be one of 81, 72, 63, 54, 45, 36, 27, 18 or 9, and they all have the same symbol, which is obviously the one you've been staring at.

The algebra explanation may explain why there is a limited number of possibilites but it still does not explain how it chose the correct symbol (from over 10 choices) ten times out of eleven. The only time it did not work was when I 'cheated' and just picked a a number instead of doing the calc in my head.

I need to know how this works!!!!

Check the symbols for 81, 72, 63, 54, 45, 36, 27, 18 and 9. They are all identical, but will change every time the page is reloaded. The ball will always show this symbol.
