Trudeau's Liberal government plans to make recreational pot legal by mid-2018. Responsibility for sales lies with the 10 provinces, which complain they will face increased costs to set up distribution networks and boost policing.

Trudeau said revenues from the proposed tax would be split equally with the provinces, adding the idea needed to be discussed in detail.

"I heard loud and clear the concerns coming from the provinces that are worried about the costs," he told a news conference after meeting most of the provincial premiers.

His proposal is for an excise tax of $1 per gram (0.04 ounce) up to 10 grams, and then 10 percent of the value of marijuana sold in quantities of more than 10 grams.

Trudeau says legalizing recreational pot will keep it out of the hands of underage users and reduce drug-related crime.

Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister said no one knew the real costs of selling pot.

"At this point, we don't know what the net (revenue) will be - we may be splitting a cost, not a net proceed," he told the news conference.

Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil and Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard said revenues would likely be modest, given the need to set prices low enough to compete with the black market.

Firms that could benefit from legalization include Canopy Growth Corp (WEED.TO), OrganiGram Holdings Inc (OGI.V), Aphria Inc (APH.TO), Aurora Cannabis Inc (ACB.TO) and MedReleaf Corp (LEAF.TO).

Wow what a surprise.....legalize it and them TAX it...I wonder if that tax will increase year over year over year akin to booze and tobacco.....long story short....tax and spend MORE with more TAXES and more useless frivilous Socialist SPENDING.

Gonna make "weed" legal...then TAX the shit out of it.....whats next a "growers licence" akin to the gun registry for the people that want to grow their own.....yeah I can see 200 MILLION of tax payer dollars being siphoned off just before the next election to be fed to Lieberal Cronies and then covered up.

You don't seem to be up to date with what all ready us happening.
There are a number of legal grow ops supplying what is supposedly is medical weed and weed products to stores. All off then are registered ,licenced and pay taxes now.

And the things is the weed of all sorts is being distended with out having a note from your doctor. Just go in to any medical marijuana store sau what you need it for ,Yes you need to state a condition, and fill out there from. Then they will give you a card for purchasing at there stores. It also states you have to get aerogel from your doctor in 90 days or so ..but it seems to never be followed up on.

I have seen groups of people from the US just go in to a store fill out the form and buy a gram bag of weed each
I would say it us for recreational use.

So what will actually change with thus proposed law/regulations?

People at present can get licences to grow their own even though is is quite restrictive .But they still grow more then they need and sell the rest. And of course there is the illegal drug trade that sells for what ever the market will bare.

And this is the observations of a none drug user that has only tried using canabisoil to treat his cancer.

Large grow ops run by gangs make a lot of money. People are murdered over it. People are killed in robberies and turf wars. A woman was killed just for producing clones and selling them on gang turf. She was a non violent criminal, by no means rich, and was not bothering anyone. But big money brings out the worst.

Large illegal grows destroy houses and are a risk to neighbours. They can catch fire...gangs make so much they are not worried about writing off a house. Other gangs can rob them for the weed, money, or just to shut them down. Large grow ops use a lot of nasty chemicals too, fertilisers they dump in sewers or alleys and very toxic pesticides to protect the crop.

And now they put fentanyl in for an extra kick. Nobody growing their own would do that.

Home growing will put a huge dent in criminal revenue and reduce policing and court costs. It may not be perfect but it is the lesser evil.

Beverly Hills. In the Kitchen eatin' vittles.
Trudeau's (the Liberal's) plan for marijuana legalization is another example of this government making a promise and then rushing to put it into action without having thought the entire process through and doing the necessary due diligence.
But should we really expect anything different from a high school drama teacher who quit both an engineering program and an environmental geography program (he actually flunked out but as a favour to his father the schools allowed him to withdraw) after 1 year.
Ever notice how often he says "Uhmm" when he talks without a script.

In Woody's defense this has happened here in Winnipeg.
I will try to find the news articles in the archives but in the past couple of years there have been 2 deaths I know about form people smoking weed laced with fentanyl.
One of them was actually a cousin of an SP I see.

Cheers

I don't think purposely. It's cross contamination when middle men deal with more than one drug. The weed gets packaged on the same table as some coke or heroin that had fentanyl in it and some gets in the weed. It's not the kind of high that's going to make a weed user come back for more.
