I need the battery on my cellphone replaced, but they're charging $100 for a new one because the brand has been discontinued. I can buy a new phone for that price! Bastards!

Is this a common practice amongst the cellphone companies?

Yes, I had to buy a new battery for my phone through Bell, but they said it was discontinued and it would be cheaper to just buy a new phone in the long run.

You may try the Flea Market on terminal to see if they have your battery there.

Cell phones, like many other electronic gadgets are pretty much considered disposable items nowadays.

Check eBay or the manufacturers own website. I have a Kyocera and they have an excellent site, a lot cheaper than the MTS store and it comes right to your door. BTW, I had about six or seven Motorolas before and their warranty and customer service suck compared to Kyocera, oh yeah the phone works a million times better too!

I got my cell about a year ago for $99 from telus. Recently I inquired about getting a spare baterry and was informed that they were $80. The telus staff "claimed" that the cost of a cell phone is mainly the battery.

Just thought I would everyone know that I just got Telus to match the FIDO cell plan of 75 dollars unlimitied calling all I had to do was say I was going to switch. If you are a heavy cell phone user like I am this is a big saving and as much as we like to bitch about Telus they have the best network IMHO. Hope I haved saved someone some coin by letting you know. And if someone already knew this WHY THE HELL DID YOU NOT SAY SOMETHING SOONER!!

Far as I'm concerned the whole cell phone thing is a rip off. Phones are rediculously overpriced, shtty to no deals if you already a member, and the amount of minutes you get with out payin $80/mo is fukkin robbery.

Well I'm with Bell and my contract is up in a couple of months. I went looking for a new phone when I renew and I found out I have to pay full price if I want to go with a newer phone.

They advertise all of these free phones but only for new subscribers. I'm screwed with an old phone that sucks or I have to shell out $150+ for a base model.

Fotura, that's bull shit. You can tell them you will not renew and switch to another company if you have to purchase another phone at full price. By this time you will qualify for a new phone at a subsidized price. Stick this bit of info up their asses.

I have two phones. City Fido and Telus Mobility (free evenings and weekends, free long distance between BC and Alberta, and long distance calls across Canada at 10cents/minute.) But I have yet to renew my Telus plan.Hmmm what to do...

When my charger broke on my cell (4 years old), Telus was charging $35 for a replacement. Considering they were selling a refurb model of the phone itself (including a charger) for only $25... well, I was pretty pissed off.

I ended up buying a used phone on eBay for $9.00 CDN. So now I have an extra battery, a functioning charger and a spare phone... all for $9.00!

You can try buying generic batteries but at best, the charge will only last for about 2 days. Have you try going to Swap Meets?

What kind of cell phone do you have? Maybe one of us has a battery sitting around unused. We could mail it out to you. I keep my old phones and the batteries still work, and I'm sure others do as well...

Thanks for the offers, but the problem has resolved itself.

This past weekend, the battery power seemed to be running out quickly. On Saturday night, I let it recharge overnight - since then, the battery power usage has been back to normal. Before, sometimes I'd only recharge for an hour or so because of time constraints: it'd be like, I wake up, discover that the battery power is low, recharge, eat, shower, unplug and out the door I go.

And if I do need a new battery...I found some unused and unexpired coupons from the store I got my phone from, which can enable me to purchase it at 1/2 price.

Vancouver - sort of
My recently pruchased cellphone experienced charging problems. Turned out it wasn't the battery at all but that the phone needed a software upgrade. took it in and all done within an hour.

You might want to check your phone for a similar charging problem. Good luck.
