The CBC currently sucks $900 million out of us taxpayers every year....since they are on strike.....should they just dry up and go away?

the CBC should continue if for no other reason than to give right-wing nazis something to complain about ...

i'd be a lot happier with the CBC if they spent more on programming that was even a fraction as good as the stuff the BBC produces.

It is a very personal tast matter and I for one will only tune in to the CBC as the other station produce nothing but silly babble.

So when the CBC production "Human Cargo" wins a Peabody Award along with "Deadwood" and the "Jon Stewart Show" is that a big enuff fraction for you?

One of the reasons that the BBC can provide the sort of programming it does is become of the T.V. license fee. Every household has to pay approximately 80 pounds a month for a colour television set. In a country with the population of the U.K. that's a lot of money. That money goes exclusively to the BBC. If the CBC's funding was on a par in relative terms it could do a lot more.

I rather suspect the people wouldn't like the notion of a user fee for t.v. given how many posts there are about stealing satellite t.v. signals. :p

I see they have retained the dubious "honor" of butchering curling! CCA and TSN have pulled in their horns because of the lawsuit threat so we are stuck with middle of the night games on some oddball CBC affiliate!

Commercial radio is horrible, mindless drivel spewing out of potty-mouthed imbeciles. News and sports coverage consists of morons trying to read articles out of the local tabloid, between making lame jokes about sex and bowel movements. Commercial radio stations don't provide anything except background noise, they provide no useful service. Even when I disagree with their viewpoint, CBC is infinitely better than any other radio in Canada. CBC is the only radio broadcaster trying to inform us of the world around us.
Totally agree with you there Woody. Too many people forget about how excellent both CBC 1 and 2 are in terms of radio.

And on the left wing bias ... I don't know. Maybe, but not markedly left wing. I would say more of a soft liberal perspective. But as if the right doesn't have ample media outlets that they control. National Post, Globe and Mail, most commercial radio, Fox news, etc., etc. And most of those don't even make a pretense of being neutral or balanced. Gimme a break!

The CBC has lost its lustre over the years...ages ago it was on par with the BBC in terms of its journalism, documentaries and programming.

Their national and international news coverage is still strong, but they are weak at the local level and Colleen Jones should stick to curling; their sports coverage is intelligent and knowledgeable for the most part (Leaf boosterism on HNIC and Don Wittman aside).

Their TV programs are the iffy part. They have produced shows I've loved in the past such as Beachcombers, Degrassi, Kids In the Hall, Dr. Dressup and the Friendly Giant. That DaVinci's Inquest show is supposed to be good enough that it's now attracting attention in the States, but I've never seen it. Other than that, how much of an audience is there for Valerie Pringle's antique show? Or for the numerous Anne Murray, Great Big Sea and Rita MacNeil musical specials? While I don't think they need to Americanize their programming nor to dumb it down to patronizing levels, I do think they need to be more in-tune with their viewing audience without looking like they're trying too hard to be hip.

Tom, it's actually 10 pounds per month, or 124 pounds per year. Interesting side point: blind people get a 50% discount!

CBC Radio is worthwhile.

CBC radio local affiliates provide very worthwhile coverage. I listen to both Calgary and Edmonton and really miss it in the morning get up to go time particularly.

From what I understand CBC wants greater flexibility. In particular, they want to have the right to hire more people on short term contracts rather than to permanent positions...
In other words, the CBC wants to be like McDonalds.

interesting

Nothing like a left wing slag to get people's back's up. CBC radio is valuable but as for the television aspect, it is a complete waste of air. I think the thing I hate the most about them is they won't even call the dickheads that flew the planes into the towers terrorists - they refuse to label them. Gimme a break, even the BBC calls them terrorists, the only other "credible" station that doesn't is fukkin' Al Jazeera.

$900 million would go a nice long way to reforming health care in our little socialist paradise.
