I'll be in Vancouver for a few days later this week and was wondering if someone can recommend a good Thai restaurant in the downtown area. Thanks.

The Banana Leaf is great! In fact, Mondays are their crab special nights, if you like dungenous crab. Now, I didn't know there was a Banana Leaf in the West End. As for Sala Thai, the one downtown is good but the first one on Cambie at 17th is much much better.

Simply Thai in Yaletown has fantastic food and very nice ambiance (a fancier priced menu, too). Check out their web site for a mouth-watering menu and awards/reviews.

If u think Banana Leaf is good, u should try Tropika even better.

Four locations: Downtown (Robson)
Cambie and 14th,
and two in Richmond.

If you like spicy, Malaysian food, then I have heard that the Tropika in the new Parker Place, Richmond, is world class.

I agree JF. Most Thai restaurants in Vancouver over-charge for their offerings. Some of the better restaurants are not the well-know ones. One thing to look out for is ownership - of course, that's easier said than done for non-locals. Many Thai restaurants, like Thai House (eight locations? Yuk), owned and operated by a Chinese restauranteur just don't cut it according to local Thai-Canadians. Not unlike Wally's Hamburgers on Kingsway (puke).

Some of the smaller eateries like Boua Thai on Kingsway, Bann Wasana on Hastings, and even Pad Thai in Maple Ridge put many large ones to shame. One of the better known ones, Salathai on Burrard, consistently over-salts its dishes, and they are very over-priced. The Sweet Tooth Cafe at Nanaimo & Hastings doesn't look like a Thai restaurant (more like a fifties era greasy spoon), but it is owned by Thais and they serve up reasonably priced Thai dishes.

As always, Caveat Emptor!
