Just was watching Global TV (channel 8 in Edm) and they were talking about the new bylaws looking to come into effect about sexual exploitation, etc.

They said that nobody from the industry/business came to the meetings to review their concerns, however during the segment they did show "Temptations" and "Penthouse".

They did say that they talked to one owner on the phone who would welcome the new laws, but felt that the industry was already heavily regulated.

I really like what the Mayor says about this - keep in mind he only has one vote on council:

Mayor Stephen Mandel said the city could give these workers a break on their $208 fee to cover the cost of the medical note.

He wouldn’t comment on whether the bylaw amounts to regulating prostitution, which is legal in Canada, although pimping, running brothels, soliciting and other related activities are not.

“You can bury your head in the sand and say it doesn’t exist. My preference is it does exist (and) we have to deal with it in a rational manner,” Mandel said.

“It’s what the oldest profession in the world is. We have to deal with the realities.”

But he wants to ensure fees and regulations aren’t so onerous the industry just ignores them.

“The most important part of the whole program is having people come in, get more information and maybe other opportunities … You always have to worry about things going underground and then not having any control at all.”
