Hi Health Nurse,

I recently went to see a SP at a Micro and while I was DATY, I tasted something metallic. It didn't hit me at first, but the taste of it was enough for me to stop.

Afterward, during intercourse, I realized she was on her period. The outside condom was bloody, and we immediately stopped the session.

While taking a shower, I was spitting out the metallic taste, only did it then hit me that I must have tasted some of her blood. This pretty much had been thinking a million thoughts of STD's.

It's a no brainer that I need to get checked (at the three month mark for HIV?), but my question is, what are the possibility/statistic from getting an STD from this experience.

And lastly, I can go to a walk-in Clinic for the blood work? This is all very unfamiliar territory for me.

Thanks again Health Nurse.

Hi google_123

We are still recommending a final HIV test at 3 months to know for sure. You can get the tests done at any doctor’s office. Here is a link on what tests to ask for when at the clinic.

It is really hard to know the exact risk as there are so many factors e.g. does the person have an infection in the first place.

To look at what could be possible with the type of sex you had I would suggest having a look at our STI risk chart.

From what you have written it sounds like you are asking “what would be the additional risk by having the blood there?” let me know if I got this wrong.

We could look at the different infections and see if having blood there would make a difference.

Hepatitis C is a virus that is passed by getting a persons infected blood into your body. Typically hepatitis C does not pass well with any type of sex but passes from sharing things that could have blood on them e.g. needles, snorting straws etc…. With DATY and menstrual blood I guess there could be a risk but I can’t imagine it would be very large. If concerned just ask for a hepatitis C test when you get your 3 month HIV test.

HIV and hepatitis B are present in vaginal fluid and can be passed with DATY. Both are low risk. If a lady had either of these infections there could be an increased risk with menstrual blood present but it is hard to say as there are so many factors. Probably the main factor would be if they are receiving treatment for either.

Getting the hepatitis B vaccine provides great protection against hepatitis B.

When performing oral sex (DATY) having good oral hygiene (healthy teeth and gums) is probably one of the biggest things you can do to reduce risk.

To reduce the DATY risk further you can also use a dental dam.
